Still looking for a defrost timer or wiring diagram...

Hey all,

Just throwing this out there again, since the warm, humid air is back and I'll be emptying/manually defrosting the GE Combination about every week.

The hot gas defrost timer we need is part number WR9X164 and, yes, I know we just missed one on eBay in April. Shoot!

Or, if anyone has the wiring diagram for the fridge so we know which wire is what (wht, blk, org, grn), John (combo52) left a defrost timer here that we can hook up as a replacement. Trouble is, we don't know which wire to put where. I'm attaching a pic of the tag for the fridge, and will post a pic of the OEM timer as well.

Chuck, have you tried Angel Appliances out in California? It's far away, but they seemed to have some interesting GE refrigerator parts when I was hunting for parts for the LW-11 wall refrigerator.

Proper Timer Wiring

Hi Chuck, I am in the process of restoring a similar 1966 GE ref with the same evaporator system and hot gas defrost. I in fact just used my last timer like I gave you guys for this project [ I bought these from Larry @ Modern Parts in Ohio back in 1999 ]

 

The proper wiring is as follows, Black wire to terminal # 1

                                                      White wire to terminal # 4

                                                      Orange or red wire to # 3

                                                     Blue or green wire to # 2

 

If you look closely at your old style defrost control you will see tinny #s next to the four terminals that are the same as on the new timer, the timer I supplied is the correct replacement defrost control for your refrigerator, Good Luck Hope this finally gets your ref working properly, John.

So, John, it's a simple case of taking #1 and putting it on #1, and so forth? YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Paul, thanks and I'll keep that in mind for other projects as I'm looking forward to this one being done with the timer that's sitting in the turquoise coffee canister on the turquoise GE Combination!!

Funny you should ask...

Today is hopefully the last defrosting- wanted to give the new timer a fresh start. I just got home from work and put a fan on the freezer section to make sure it's good and dry before I hook up the new defroster and take her for a drive!

The replacement defrost timer's in there with a modified mounting bracket and appears to be running like a top! The real test will be when it hits the defrost mode. I have no doubt that John's right about the part. That's a given. I just have the tiniest reservation, as I'm sure is normal, that the part will be OK and not a factory dud. The pessimist part of me sees the timer hanging in defrost and not clicking over to refrigeration mode. I'm the same way with most electrical parts of this sort. Hell, I don't even trust lamp timers until I've seen them work correctly.

Hooray for us being defrost-free, and able to enjoy this GE for many years to come!! Thanks once again, John!!!
