Stinky Asko

Hey everyone,
I got a used Asko W6000 series washer and dryer to use in the new house. Im having an issue with it smelling really bad. I have tried citric acid on the hottest cycle, I have tried vinegar, and I have tried using Oxygenated bleach. I also leave the door propped open when not in use. Anyone have any other ideas? I know you can use bleach and I really don't want to tear the thing apart.

I've had my Asko for 20 years and have used bleach the entire time.  The only time I smell anything is if it has been sitting unused for a few days and I open the coin/pin trap.  That water inside it can get a little rank!  The concertina hose from the bottom of the drum to the pump gets slimy inside.  I've had to change mine out twice and both times found it to be the case even with regular bleach usage.  I found a washer at Goodwill a couple of years ago and it smelled foul inside too.  I'm sure it's because the folks at Asko tell us not to use chlorine bleach in their washers because they "don't" need it so people avoid using it.  They will follow that advice in the owner's manual but will ignore when Asko says to leave the door open!  Too bad we can't just buy some formaldehyde to put inside and let sit for a while because formaldehyde can achieve chemical sterilization.  But seriously, I would pour some Clorox or dishwasher detergent with chlorine in it and let it go through an extra long extra hot cycle and see if that helps.  I wouldn't want to tear it apart either...  Just my .02, your mileage may vary.

Cleaning A Stinky FL Washer

I agree with everything Greg said and just keep running a large load of old towels through the machine with LCB, having the towels in the washer causes more sloshing of the water inside the outer tub as the washer does its spin cycle and cleans it better.

 

In our business we are cleaning up stinky washers every week, and they always clean up with enough aggressive use, but it some times takes nearly 30 loads of laundry to do it.

Pull the detergent drawer out and look what's inside there.

Pulled detergent drawer, it was clean and mold free. I also pulled the drain pump clean out. Found 20 cents and it also was clean as a whistle. [this post was last edited: 7/27/2017-21:11]

probably just funk on the drum.  I doubt it has seen many 205F washes.  Can't be the boot...it doesn't have one.  If you are curious, you can probably remove one of the baffles (mine has one torx screw in each one) and look beneath with a flashlight at the outer drum to see if it has visible funkiness.  I looked at mine a few times just to check and it was just as shiny as the inner drum was.  Like John said, it will clean up as it is used "correctly".
