stinky dishwasher

My wife let some food go bad in one of her favorite Tupperware dishes, I mean really bad. It was ran throught the dishwasher three times and now the dishwasher stinks. Does anyone have any idea on how to get that out.

The dishwasher is a Kenmore, approx 8-9 years old(it was here and relatively new when we bought the house 6 years ago), white plastic insides with blue racks.

Things to try

You might try citric acid, either as pure citric acid (drug stores- ask at pharmacy counter), or Tang-

or the "Jet Dry Dishwasher Cleaner",

or, the ultimate odor weapon, an unscented spray called "Smells Begone." If my attempt at linking doesn't work, smellsbegone.com. Around here, it is avaliable at an independent drugstore chain called Discount Drug Mart.

I miss porcelain lined dishwashers.

how about a heated long wash with a 1/2 cup of clorox after the spray starts, stop it maybe a 1/2hour then let it complete its run. I use chlorinated electrosol and often add a little laundry bleach, especially if its an oops and did not run the dw for a day or two.

Yes; I heard Tang was great for dishwashers and disposals; gives a nice "orangey fresh" scent.

Also, the use of a rinse agent will curb any funny smells; I've noticed dishwasher detergent isn't very strong on the scent department.

I clean our DW out each month by removing the lower rack and running it on Pots & Pans (highest water level) for 2 minutes (2 minutes OR LESS) with a small amount of dish soap. It gets rid of any trace of dirt, but you have to regulate how much you use or you will clean your floors as well.

And lastly, don't put laundry detergent in your dishwasher to clean it. From my experience there were no bad side effects, but you literally have to shovel out the suds, and regardless of how much you use, clean floors are guaranteed!

And if the Tupperware still stinks, I've heard that leaving it (or any stinky plasticware)out in the sunlight for a couple of days works, too.

Probably wouldn't have had this problem if dishwasher detergents still had chlorine in them.

some of the discount warehouse type stores (Big Lots here) sell a generic dishwasher detergent. I use the Big Lots brand. It still has chlorine in it and smells much like old Cascade or ElectraSol. Regular ElectraSol still has bleach in it, and so does Kroger brand.

Big Lots

I love Big Lots, I get Ariel there for $2 a box. Of course, I do laundry for a family of 4 and that box last one week, but hey, it is a very nice clean smell.

I bought some of the Big Lots Dishwasher detergent this week. I really like it and I've noticed that the interior of the dishwasher is getting whiter .
