As you know my degree should be near even more... but then?!?!?

I'm bored of this country... I know how many people abroad could appreciate Italy, but I assure you that is not "all gold what is shining"...(my mum's proverbial sentence)

I can't stand anymore in a place where there's not freedom at all!

Since I was young I've been always dreaming of AMERICA! Here what we can see about it's sometimes some telefilm, TV serial, things such as Desperate Housewives for example, or Dawson's Creek...

But I'm sure that another America do exist! The real Ameica where you can become an attorney even if your father is not already an attorney, because here is like that!!!

Job managers see WHO you are, not WHAT have you studied, WHAT you are good at, WHAT you wan to become, and WHAT are you going to become...

So the SENIORS stay on their armachair, and for peoplce like me, I mean the young twenty-years boys and girls have to knock how many doors seeing them slashing in front of their cheecks?!?!? Should we hope to someone to die?!?!? I hope no, but this is a stage becoming "dramatic"

In the meanwhile, many boats of Norhtern Africa Immigrants land to Sicily... and many other Balcanic, Moroccan, Libanes...Poloskian, Bulgarian, Russian...

At the end, here Italy seems to have not ever existed and is disappearing at all... I dont' absolutely want to seem racist, we live in a free world (I hope!)

So, you study until your degree, your parents make a lot of costs to maintain your studies, and at the end??? You have ONLY a sheet of paper in your hand?!?

Don't imagine to start with a busines! Taxes amount and burocracy will you lead to becaome crazy, it would really be like running for the hill!

Thus, my dear friends, can I ask you if does really America is THE FREEDOM WORLD!?!?!

HELP ME! Let me know how to reach "a better world", where non-sense things do not exist or at least are hide well...

I would like the best to "emigrate"... to reach the United States of America and get hired overthere, work, live, enjoy... THERE!

I've already applyed some job reaserches on Moster.com, where I compiled an on-line personal resume, but what shoud I do more?
I think that is not enough to get my "dreams", so what else it would be right to do looking for a job in the STATES?!?!

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH! :-))

Bye
Diomede

I feel the same

I also wish to leave UK Diomede for Canada.

I have been unemployed for 13 weeks now and its driving me crazy. I have a BSc (Hons) and MSc but limited experience so I cant get jobs in my field and no one will even interview me for other jobs because Im overqualified.

I feel the same as you .... Biggest regret of my life was going to University for 5 years.

As for the UK , Sadly its becoming a police state by day.

Where ever u end up, relocation will be hard. Its not easy.

All the best .

Diomede-----

Your Mother is right---"all that glitters is NOT gold"!

All of us have our paths to walk through life. Some have it harder than others. Some have doors open and when they step through them there are fantastic opportunities. Others don't recognize the door and don't step through. Then others never even have a door. It is how it is meant to be.

Follow your dreams. If a door is waiting for you----step through it. If there is no door---then it is not yet time to make a move. You can make some things happen in life but you will never have it all! The most frustrating thing is: it happens in its own time, not in ours.

(Don't I sound like an "old sage"--oh well I mean well.)

Have you been to America to visit? If not, then you need to do so. A plane ticket has become pretty cheap. Take "Ryanair" to London, Paris or Amsterdam then it is fairly easy to find a cheap ticket via one of the airlines flying into Atlanta. Delta (sometimes) has a decent fare out of Rome. That way you will have a better idea of what you are getting into. You are welcome to visit here in Atlanta, I always welcome guests---and have some old washers to play with. I'd be glad to show you around the city--both good and bad. I'm sure others in the club would do the same.

Best wishes to you and your future!

The Freedom World? Well, sorta kinda, lol!

First off, if you're thinking seriously of moving here, you should definitely visit here first and check it out.

One thing I can tell you, beyond a shadow of a doubt, is that you CAN become anything you want to become here. This may not be without a price, though. You will work harder and longer than you have ever imagined you would ever work, if you want to attain your goal. But you can do it.

That said, I have a lot of Italian friends, most born in Italy, some from here.

I will tell you that a few of the straight ones head right home after they've established careers here-because they want to start a family and healthcare costs are IMPOSSIBLE here.

But they've all gone back to Italy, with the head start career-wise they got here.

If you want to live in an urban area, cost of living can be high.

Some of my Italian-American friends have older parents that have immigrated from Italy many years ago. They generally seem to go back-because they can live better on Italy's social services system-and reclaim old memories.

That said, you COULD be happier here. But I cannot emphasize enough, check us out first. If you come with credentials, bear in mind they may not all be accepted here, in certain fields.

You have to do your homework, and research the opportunities that are here.

It might be easier to further your education here, but this can also be expensive. Also, any American degrees you get here may not (sigh) be accepted in Italy. Again, take nothing for granted.

Take a holiday and come visit America! It's better to see for yourself whether you even really want to do this. Float the idea with your friends and family, and see what they think.

You have to check it out for yourself.

Oh, and if you are taking requests, I have four words:

"Ciccolino Marsiglia Stiro-Facile"!! lol

Grazie.

Best of luck, Scotty

just remember

if you move to America or the UK you will become a puppet of George Bush and Tony Blair. That pair of idiots are the original Muppets. George Bush should of been shot at birth. Shame Georgey boy likes Tony to lick his backside so much. If he directed his pleasures towards other duties IE Running His country he wouldnt be in this state now. FACT! See you in New Zealand Diomede, thats the only sane place to live with real values.

No puppets here! You are free to say what you feel in the USA. (you cannot say someone should be shot though, so be careful with that sort of talk)
The people here have a choice as to vote or not. If more people voted we would have better results. I think the American people are going to teach our leaders a lesson this time. And it will be a hard lesson they need to learn. And we will all be better off for it.

Some other things to remember--

Diomede-

I agree with the others who have said "come visit."

We are not trying to discourage you at all.

Have you read Beppe Severigni's (spelling?) "Ciao, America"? That would be a good place to start.
Even though he and his wife Ortensia lived in Washington DC, some of his experiences could be useful.

If you could possibly come for a month or six weeks that would be even better.

I agree about health care. I did not have health coverage for over 20 years, even though I was working full time at times during that period.

Your English is good, and better than my Italian, but you do need the total immersion practise with native speakers.

The United States is a HUGE country, and it is not possible to go from one coast to the other in the same day except by air.

The private automobile is nearly required, especially in smaller cities, suburbs, and the country.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

Thank you all!

Now that I heard you... I know that a "better wordl" REALLY exists...
You have "at least" answered me...you can't imagine here how many times I didn't get no answer... is the thing that makes me angry most!

Neil, so I have to hear that the whole Europe is not good again... but what is happening? You should find yourself in truoble whether you had NOT EHOUGH qualifications... and guess what? The trouble is that you are OVERQUALIFIED!!! That's an absurdity!! I feel near you, I hope you to have a better future, my best wishes!

Scotty, of course I first will come there to visit and to see with my own eyes!:-) Of course I'll take a plane:-)
Then, here I seriuosly fight with a rather narrow mentality, and not just with the problem of not easily find a job!
Italy would be the freedom world either for me, but what is the price?!?!? A price I WOULD NEVER PAY!
What you have said about Italian-American is true, and me either I heard story like those you told me, but... if those people came to US to easely work and gain the right amount of money to live better here, that's not my case at all!
I would accept either a work NOT corresponding with my titles... there, NOT HERE! Here it would be because the better work...let's say is kept "in warm" for the already-decided-man/women arriving...
At the end... from what I have seen/learn/heard about US, I rather sure that I coul fell good there... so, wait, the right moment to live this "stopped" country is arriving soon...

Nick, yes! Why don't think to New Zeland... to come out of here it would be enough, let's see at the Spain, I know many people who got there from here, and they feel good! Spain, France... I need to leave Italy only, then the nearer the better:-))
I don't agree with Bush amministration either, but what about Berlusconi then? :-))

Thanks to all!
Diomede

You are free to say what you feel in the USA.

Ah... here?!?!? Don't forget Vatican...:-)))You have to be VERY CAREFUL to what say...

Aquarius, you would probably like the film that is opening in the U.S. today, "Death of a President." It's a fictional account of Bush's assasination. What I find interesting about this film's opening is that it's only going to end up in 120 theaters nationwide. This is compared to the controversial "Passion of the Christ" having opened in 6,000 theaters, and it is the same distributor. There's your puppetry in action. This film is going to be widely distributed in Canada, a progressive country whose citizens across the board rightly despise Bush.

In what is supposed to be a free society, the major theater chains have chosen to deny the public the option to decide for themselves if they want to see this film by stating they will not carry it in their theaters. Only independent and "art house" theaters will be showing this film. Fortunately for me, the nearest theater to where I live is one of these independents and will be showing it starting tonight. I'd like to show my support for the film maker by paying to go see it rather than waiting for it to be on DVD. I must say it strikes me as odd that this film is being suppressed, but records by rappers that promote killing cops and abuse of women are freely played on the radio and widely sold in stores. Go figure.

Even in a free society people are reluctant to say they'd like to see the president dead, but if ever there was a president for which an exception to that restraint was in order, it is George W. Bush. It's quite clear that he selected Dick Cheney for VP as an insurance policy. Nobody's going to take Bush out if it means Cheney ends up in charge, even if Cheney has been in charge behind the scenes since 1/20/2001 anyway.

Now regarding coming to the USA and making a go of it, the future of the job market is going to be huge in the area of alternative energy sources. There is a measure on the California ballot that will place a tax on oil production and use those funds for development of alternative energy sources. If the federal government won't pursue this, we need to do it on our own. If California voters approve this (and the oil companies are spending record amounts trying to defeat it) it will open the door to alternative energy research across the country. I believe the employment scene in that sector of the economy is on the verge of explosive expansion in the coming years. If you have educational background that can be applied to this field, you can probably find a good job.

Please don't assume that what you see on TV shows like Desperate Housewives and Dawson's Creek to be the way things really are in the USA. Desperate Housewives is a fun program, but it's a comic book accounting of life in suburbia and not realistic. I suggest watching more PBS and non-commercial programming that better captures the more real side of life in the USA. And most of all, I recommend a trip here to explore your options, if you can afford it.

And a few more words of advice: If you come here to get a look at life in the USA, keep in mind that you are here on holiday and that you are not having to concern yourself with the cost of housing and the long commutes fighting traffic that many workers here face every day. I visit my sister in Los Angeles and I love spending time there. But if I had to live and work there and fight traffic every day to and from my job, I'm sure I wouldn't find it nearly as fun. Be sure you recognize the realities around living and working in the USA. You will likely only get 2 weeks of vacation time every year to start. I've heard that in Europe it's typically 6 weeks of vacation a year. In the USA, you might have to be working for a company for 20 years before you will be given that amount of time off. These are a few things to consider, and yes, if you want to get rich, it will take a lot of hard work and enthusiasm.

Come on over and take a look, if you like what you see then by all means, welcome to the USA. Even with a guy like Bush in charge, it's still a great place to be.

Diomede, I do not want to sound like the voice of gloom and doom here, but people are waiting years to get into this country on work visas; even people who are wanted desperately by employers who want to hire them. Tourists do not have quite as much trouble, but there can be hang-ups unless you are of the House of Saud.

This is a tough country for the newly arrived unless you have family here. Outside of living expenses, the cost of medical care is enough to give the uninsured a very rough time. Many college graduates are forced to return home to live with their parents, even many of the fortunate who find jobs, just because it is so expensive to live in the large metropolitan areas here. Areas that are not large and expensive often do not have a lot of employment opportunities; besides who wants to move to America and live where there is none of the pulse of life that you are seeking?

Best bet: Find some one very wealthy who cannot live without you and who loves to travel. Then you do not have to work and can visit here most of the time and travel to all of the most beautiful spots in the world, like Hawaii.

I don't know where to begin...

"if you move to America or the UK you will become a puppet of George Bush and Tony Blair. That pair of idiots are the original Muppets. George Bush should of been shot at birth. Shame Georgey boy likes Tony to lick his backside so much. If he directed his pleasures towards other duties IE Running His country he wouldnt be in this state now"

....with a statement like the above.

Whether you voted for or onboard with Bush/Blair, suggesting that people in these two countries are puppets is insulting, as well as suggesting our President should be shot. Do you honestly pull your head out when you make a statement like that?

Further, if you are suggesting that the US as a country is in bad shape, I might remind you that the US is seeing an economic boom, strong Wall Street even with a war going on and many other things that doomsayers have said would impact us have not happened, and we have VERY low unemployment rates. Ask Germany about their unemployment rate. All this without the artificial "Internet Economy" of the 90s which was destined to run out of steam. Remember that a single state, California, where I live, has a stronger economy than most COUNTRIES of the world. So much for your statement that our country is not run well, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Our country is anything but puppets. I will ask people, however, who bitch and complain that our country is so bad why THEY don't run for office and try to change things, if THEY are actively writing their congressmen, if THEY are lobbying for change. The people that complain the most often do the least.

Now some thoughts around Diomede's original statements.

Do NOT base your interpretation of America on television programming. Our programming, for the most part, is geared for the young thinking and overly dramatizes the best and worst of things. No one here talks like Dawson, Desperate Housewifes is to me desperate programming, and so on. It's just entertainment, not true American culture.

My parents hosted some exchange students from the UK years ago, and they expected California, where I live, to be like Texas. Why wasn't everyone wearing cowboy boots and speaking in a southern accent? (I won't even go into the fact that Texas itself is diverse) They assumed alot from TV programming. Also, some crime shows would have you think that gang activity is everywhere and you fear walking out of your house you may be shot. Just isn't true.

I am sure visitors to Italy expect that everything looks like Roman ruins and everyone drives scooters and Fiats. Again, interpretations based on limited knowledge.

Now, what is true is that you can absolutely become anything you want to in this country, and that includes the President. No one cares who your family is. No one cares if your father is a lawyer, outside of perhaps a few "good ol' boy" law firms that you would not want to work at anyways. While racism and intolerance may exist in some people, it is not in mainstream values. Many companies in fact, bend over backwards with diversity and outreach programs. We are a generous society, and regardless of what they extreme left would have you believe, we are not a society that leans to a theocracy and you are welcome to practice whatever religion you like, or none if you like.

There is so much opportunity here it is amazing. However, to reap the real rewards you have to work hard, which is no different than anywhere else. Almost everyone complains we pay too much in tax, but few people realize the percentages other countries pay for socialized medicine and the government becoming overinvolved in our life.

Our media is completely open, and can be rabidly critical of any presidential administration or anything else. We have no limits on our web access.

What do I not like about my country? Well, to be honest, it's some of the PEOPLE!

For one, I think a great many of our people have no appreciation for what they do have. They should read about the struggles and concerns that Diomede has that doesn't even cross their minds. I think many people have no idea of sacrifice or giving something back to their country, or what our grandparents' and parents' generation sacraficed to keep our country free. I think many people disrespect our military, and believe that that everything is a conspiracy and everything is controlled. Aside from the fact that I agree that we need to be watchdogs over corporations exerting too much influence-and I think they do-I don't subscribe to the theory that we are all puppets, or that "George Bush and his Cronies" are all "in on it" and we are not. I just think that is a bunch of ignorant BS. Our President only has so much influence, and that's the way it should be.

Lastly a few items. I find it disturbing that many people believe our freedom is free and should be taken for granted. I think we drift away from solid values and a respect for human life. I think our many people have a cavalier attitude towards abortions and the rights of the unborn, and I have no respect for people that think that murderers/imprisoned terrorists/radical religious based maniacs deserve our compassion and our understanding. I reject the moral equivalence and "blame America first" mentality of many of our leftist educational institutions. I think our public school system should be privatized.

So, is America perfect? No. Is it one of the best places in the world to work/play/live? I think it is the best. I also think that other countries, including Italy, have value, beauty , and special attributes that should be appreciated also. There are good things everywhere, I like to think America works to take the best of everything and have it in one place.

I agree with the previous writer that the best thing to do is to come and visit and see for yourself!

I think I'll give my $0.02. First thing that you would have to do Diomede is learn more English. I think I can say my English is better but even I still find it difficult sometimes to communicate with other people when I'm in the US. I sometimes miss the point of a conversation and that's not a big problem for me. But when your English isn't good and you have to communicate in a work situation, then you will have it very difficult.

I agree with the people who say that you should visit the US for a while. But... I travelled to the US three times and I think I still haven't got a decent view on how my life would be for me when I would move to the US. A holiday will always be a holiday. You mostly get to see only the sunny side.

If you have considered everything and you still want to move, then you should go for it.

One thing though, have you considered moving to another European country? As a citizen of a European country you are entitled to work in other countries that are part of the European Community.

Sorry RP

My mind just boggles at what you state here.

First of all, I have a newsflash for you. No theater chain is obligated to show you anything, and that's not censoring. The government throwing you in jail for watching it, or preventing it being shown anywhere, THAT is censorship. Your logic is the same applied when many country music stations dumped playing Dixie Chicks crapola when they said inflammatory remarks, not only about the President, but about country folks. Sorry, radio stations get to choose what they play, see, THAT'S freedom.

If I owned a movie chain? I wouldn't play a film that dramatized the death of a sitting President, and I don't care if that is Bush, Carter, Clinton. I think it's a sick kind of idea, made by someone not even from this country with an political agenda, regardless if the spin on it is the phony positioning that "all violence is bad" as the director stated in an interview. Yeah. Tell you what, I wouldn't play "The Hills Have Eyes" either, or a documentary that showed a prisoner getting his head cut off by a terrorist. If I owned a radio station, I certainly would not play any music that glorifies killing and raping women, as an example. And guess what, I have that right to select and play what I want, as I own the station. Don't like that? Open up your own station/store/moviehouse. You still have many other venues to go see whatever material you want to see.

That's the difference between choice, and censorship. Kind of like the difference between the US, and say, the Taliban.

I'm not going to get into it with dueling rants here Kevin, I agree with some of what you have to say in fact, especially regarding treatment of criminals, deplorable educational system, and my own peave, irresponsible parenting.

Suffice it to say that you can't be reasoned with anymore than George W. Bush can, but fortunately people with your radical views are in the minority when it comes to approving the job Bush is doing. The dislike for Bush spans the globe.

And you have likened my views to those of the Taliban. Oh sure, Kevin, that is downright absurd and perfectly demonstrates how skewed your views are.

By the way Diomede, if you watch "The OC" on TV that's not the real OC either. It's actually over-run with people like Kevin.

rp2813, Because the war is not going as we thought, anyone in office would be despised. What if people felt the same about FDR in the first part of world war two? WE may all be speaking German right now,or japanese.Don
