Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

I don't know what to say to Diomede - if Italy is genuinely not working for you then a change may be appropriate, but altering your location may just be the first step towards happiness which also comes from within.

RC, I think that Kevin's lengthy and articulate post more than demonstrates than he is just the man to reason with - so BRING IT ON!

As I understand it, Kevin's closing line was an expression of opinion (and one which I support) and not directed at you personally.

I do not know Kevin at all, but I notice that he does not mention you personally at all in his post, whereas you insult him twice in yours. Is it OK to suggest someone's views are skewed simply because they don't tally with your own?

Regards to all

Nick

`This film is going to be widely distributed in Canada, a progressive country whose citizens across the board rightly despise Bush'

RP, wow, is it ok for you to speak on behalf of the whole of Canada?

Can you define `widely' ?

Yes, Louis, you're partially right - the original topic was Diomede expressing an opinion about living in the USA, and the freedom that may give him, and not about individual political viewpoints.

It's also true that the original question was not about politics specifically, but then I guess it was bound to come up.

Howvever, on the other hand, I see no wrong in people expressing their differing views, as this is aa big part of the issue we're dealing with, and I would hope Diomede would find it interesting to read the differing political views of (especially) the US citizens. I certainly would, if I had asked the question.

Nick

Nick,

Lately political discussions come up in all kind of threads, even the picture thread suffered from it. Ofcourse Diomede started this thread and I will leave it further to him, but I find it rather hard to keep following the threads because of the extensive political debates. IMHO I'd prefer at least a separate thread for politics.

Louis

Yes, I can see that Louis,

I suppose it's easy for people to let the world know how they feel via the web, but that doesn't mean it's a legitimate `sounding off' box.

You're right Louis, I shall refrain from political comment `from this moment on' (to quote Shania).

Anyway, it doesn't alter the unresolved mystery of - why, on a 70's Philips Slimstar Toploader, if you selected (1-5, `mainwash') did it do a little cold water prewash before it started mainwash? And why were there to no 7s? One for blankets, one for woolens?

Nick

"Kevin, I wish more Americans felt the same way. Don"

Did you feel the same way when a recent WABC docu-drama portrayed President Clinton's handling of events regarding terrorism prior to Bush's ascension to power as bumbling and ineffective, even though this little romp through revisionist history was thoroughly debunked?

Were our sanctified guardians and "culture warriors" out there, demanding this little vulgarity be pulled from public view?

Mmmm, no, didn't think so.

This is a new world.

Lead, follow, or, God help us, get out of the way.

This is why each day when I walk my dogs along the river and look across it to the USA side I'm glad I live on the Canadian side LOL.
Thanks for the posting Kevin, even though I probably don't agree with some of your positions on certain issues.

While I'm certainly no Bush supporter I don't like to see such utter disrespect and contempt. That's what voting booths are for. I wished their was some way that people were "marked" that showed they had voted because when you hear about the dismal voter turn outs, not just in the USA but here as well, most people have no right to complain in the first place. I always always always vote, always have. My partner on the other hand I don't think has bothered once in 30+ years no matter how much I've prodded so as far as I'm concerned he has no right whatsoever to complain.

In fact I'll bet there are people on here right now bellyaching and name calling that didn't vote in their last election, though they'll never admit it.

I have only missed two elections

since being eligible to vote in 1978, and both were primaries. Both times were due to illness.

I agree, Pete, "Don't vote? Don't complain!"

I just read in the other thread that it's compulsory to vote in Australia, didn't know that. Not sure if that's the way to go either. Maybe they should give you a card after you vote to prove you did..then when someone starts ranting, ask to see their card and if they don't have one dismiss them as not worthy of listening to. LOL

Here in Ohio

You're given a little sticker reading "I voted today" when you hand in the ballot/Diebold control card.
(This will be the third election in my county with the Diebold machines, still don't like them.)

In some locales, the sticker is accepted as a free bus pass for the day. At the Chipotle deluxe fast-food "Mexican" restaurant, you get a discount.
(At least here. Don't know about the rest of the chain.)

It breaks my heart that there's so low rates of voter turn-out, especially with all the "freedom" and war rhetoric. I see not voting when you're eligible to vote as a slap in the face of the troops defending the right to vote!
(See, Democrats can be patriots, too!)

Lawrence/Maytagbear

The Diebold voting machines have no paper trail.

What's to like?

By the same token, paper/absentee ballots are pointless to use here, since they get tossed the minute the tallies hit a certain percentage.

I've voted consistently since the '84 cycle....

Back to D....

Do you have any idea where in America you'd want to live, if you could afford something reasonable?

Do you have any friends or family here?

You can always check out craigslist.org for listings of apartments and such (just don't believe the pictures, lol!)

George Bush is in control of America? I dont think so!

If he was he would of stamped out Gun crime by now. My issue with it? Gun crime is now part of daily life in the UK! Influenced by Americans our American wannabe population of different races are now in their element. Young Jesse James who was laid to rest recently lived less than 50 miles from me. 50 miles too close for my liking. Its not just bushs fault Tony Blair is to blame too but like i said if they spent less time touching eachother up while having a sing song both countries would be in order. Diomede sorry your thread ended up like this but like NickUK said the politics of each country count. My fight here is not very well researched as someone will no doubt point out but when it comes to the crunch here in cheshire to be like an american with a gun in your pocket is the latest fashion. Its been a long night at work and i need some sleep. Maybe later i can explain myself better. All walks of life meet here so i hope you can make an educated decision on whether or not you like the way America is run. I dont want to force opinions on you, and for the token the UK Is a hell hole to live in too. Take case Diomede , all the best Nick.

:-)) Thanks! And at the end...

Let me thank everyone of you who has spent such kind word for me...

First of all, I undesrstood that the best it would be to visit there and to see with my eyes... I suspected that TV didn't give the right point of view of the USA...in fact since I've been partecipating to this website I realized that another USA exists and of course it's not the TV one :-)) This one I appreciate more, where people affirm, confirm, and confute...at the end it's not an act!

Yes, I've got some realives in US, my granparents (grandfather stayed there in the '20 for 8 years before coming back ad get married) went there to visit them and my uncles and aunts either (only dad didn't unluckly!)... they have been livign in New Jersey, sinche they have moved to Cape Coral in Florida...
One of my father's cousin had a "store"(I don't know what exactly was his job) in Brooklyn too, until 1976.
Onother one is a Medical Doctor to the Parkevenue Radiologists in New York...his sister with her husband moved to Florida.
Many times I tryed to contact at least one of them but no feed back since now...

Yes :-)) I MUST to improve my English... anyway I thought it were good... perhaps at writing/reading/speaking... the worst is the listening...but a bit of training staying there would be good. Remeber that I attempted a three-years course of French in three months!! Anywasy I was younger :-))

Thanks specially to those people who spoke of politics in this thread... that's an important aspect to talk about either.

I know it's hard to live (but where it's not?), but after this thread, my opinion is the same...of course I'll take another point of view and the "moving idea" is not a dream again... but a life changing to do considering every precious prompt you gave me. Anywasy I'm quite flexible to adapting in any situation... I wouldn't think to move if I were not like that...and I will accpet every sort of changing only thinking to live with people who thik even just a little different from how generally the mantality here it is!

Thanks everyone! See you on this site thus to speak about washers again!

I just had to speak up-on the "gun crime" issue-In the US the areas that have the HIGHEST "gun crime" are those that have strict gun control laws.In areas that don't have gun control--the gun crime is very low and the streets are safe.In the area I am in now-sounds of gunshots(its deer hunt season here)is not unusual.when I went to work in Downtown DC at night-the gunshots were VERY unusual.Sometimes I had to "hit the deck"this was not hunters shooting at deer-but criminals shooting at each other-and unlike hunters-these guys are poor marksmen.Their bullets fly all over.I think the freedoms of gun ownership and use here make things safer. If they are banned-only the "baddies" have them and the citizens are the sheep led to the slaughter.I will fight all I can to preserve the 2nd amendment in the US-if that is taken away-all of the other rights and amendments are easier to take away.Besides appliances I have a small gun collection and use them occasionally.Plus its nice to have them in case I should have to defend myself or home.I am for prosecuting anyone that uses guns as instruments of aggression.Yes, put those criminals in jail where they belong-and get rid of the court judges that refuse to prosecute the crooks and just let them go again to plaugue society and law enforencement.I know many law enforcement officers and gun control to them would make their jobs more difficult and dangerous.I hope I haven't opened a can of worms here.--But freedoms are at stake.

This may surprise many....

Especially since (or maybe because?) I'm from a place that's been ravaged by gun-related violence....

But I agree with tolivac.

I'll never be convinced that the solution to violence in this country is to take away the only means that law-abiding people have to defend themselves and go on with their lives.

I am sorry to anyone who's been a victim of crime, or who has lost a friend or family member to a criminal act.

But, sadly, the situation is too far gone.

It's not fair, and I know it's not right....but it is the reality of the situation that many folks are forced to live in.

In Wash DC-handguns were banned in 1975 along with severe restrictions on long arms such as rifles and shotguns. The last time I worked in DC,(1999) they set a record-almost 500 people killed that year-and 30 in a single night due to a "gang shootout"I feel safer here in NC.Not more than 30 get killed here due to crime in the WHOLE YEAR!There is even a bullet pockmark in the side of the building where I used to work in DC due to a stray from one of those gang shootouts.Someone could have been hurt or killed. And 3 tourists got killed from a high speed chase right in front of the building I worked at-going to work for the afternoon shift-part of the area was cordoned off with the yellow police barracade tape.-on the other side were a police car and the suspect car both wrapped around streetlight poles. And the street was littered with the body parts from the tourists that got hit.Glad to be here!!Work in the middle of the countryhope it lasts.Much quieter and safer.I am glad I didn't arrive several minuts earlier.
