thousands are already here

The hospitals are full++

We worked until 10 last night and started at 4 this am.
All the hotels are full and most all the shelters too. Hundreds are sleeping in cars in the parks..People are "attacking" the food stores too. Already a real mess.

Please know that all of you in the effected area are in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care and be safe!! Terry

We're catching Ike here

We have gotten almost 10 inches of rain overnight. Now remember in flat ole Kansas a backed up toliet will cause trouble. They are dismissing schools, there is water 2ft over some of the roads out west of town, and there are 1,000 stranded in Winfield at the fairgrounds bluegrass festival.

Well, this morning was a nice morning. Kind of humid. Winds are about 10 mph. Karen and I took ALL the dogs to the dog park this morning and ran their little legs off with Frisbee and ball for three hours. Everyone is now pooped out. We dont' want a house full of wild ass dogs during the storm.
It's cloudy out. I suspect that we won't see anything here till maybe 10pm tonight. We have a very large walk in closet in the center of the house and we put airm atresses and dog beds in there. If it gets too bad, we'll go in there.
The National Weather service has reduced the estimated winds for my area from 80pmh to 40-60mph. Hopefully, it won't be too bad.
Here is a great website to monitor the storm on. Everything is on one page. The viewing options are on the top of the page. It contains the latest information.

Panthera, you make a good point about during katrina that alot of the help needed was actually in Texas to run the shelters filled to capacity with Louisiana folks. Well, you can bet your bottom dollar that we Louisiana folk will ALWAYS be there for our Texas neighbors. they are there for us and don't forget that we in Louisiana are gonna get hit pretty good with the Eastern side of IKE. I live so far north in the state that I'm almost to the Arkansas line but we are in the wake of a lot of wind and possible power outages here as well. My town was inundated by evacs during the Gustav storm so we are always ready.

Here it is 3:13PM.The skies are overcast and there is a constant breeze around 10 MPH.Forty(40)percent of Galvestonians STAYED HOME!!!! They're sure to die!The water began rising this morning and hasn't stopped since! Some areas 4'!The hurricane doesn't hit till 1AM,saturday!According to chanel 13,the storm is currently strengthining in the Gulf!

Well, there was this guy in Surfside who has a house right on the Gulf. His friends pleaded with him to leave, but he said he wasn't. He was going to sit on his porch and drink a beer.
Well, his house is now a long, long way from the shoreline and the posts his house are built on are eroding. His friends are text messaging with him. You guessed, he now wants somebody to come and rescue him. Coast Guard said "No buddy, you had your chance. We are not going to risk ourselves to save you!".
So far up here, no action yet. We are going to take a nap so we can be awake and aware tonight!

Even in Arkansas....

With the oil refineries being shut down in the gulf due to Ike and the pipelines being shut down too, our gas has soared over $1.50 a gallon overnight. We're sitting around $5.00. Our Governor has declared a state of emergency which will allow prosecution of price gougers on gasoline. Hotels are filling up all around Little Rock and the surrounding areas. During Gustav, hotels were filled all the way to Branson, MO, that about another 5 hours from here.

We're due to get 10"+ of rain here between Saturday afternoon to Sunday evening.

Thoughts and prayers to all the people in harms way.

Jeff

PS> how bad is it in Wichita, Mom's south--in Derby about 1/2 mile from the river, hopefully up on high enough ground!

According To News Reports

Cost Guard and local LE changed their minds, and did go around with a dump truck and other to rescue the remaining few in Surfside.

Personally think anyone who does not obey an evacuation order, ought to be left to face their own decision; however human nature being what it is, and some damn people so ignorant and pig-headed, you hate so see anyone die of being stupid.

Persons are saying the same thing they said in NO and parts before Katrina," I was here for Gloria, Camille, (insert your favourite "killer" hurricane here), and survived, why should I leave this time?

It's not nice to fool with mother nature!

Wow - the reports and video already coming in from the TX coast are scary. The storm surge with this storm is just incredible, I've been looking at the BBC pictures of Haiti and Cuba and Ike has certainly left his mark there. Get out Ike's way, it's nothing to mess with.

Keep safe everyone!!

To tell you the truth, I don't think this is going to be a real bad one up where I live. I think we may get some 50mph wind gusts and maybe 6 inches of rain. I'm 100 miles north of Galveston.
But you are right, Galveston and Seabrook are getting wholloped with storm surge. And there are STILL gawkers on Galveston Island taking photos and talking on cell phones.

The latest forecasts have Ike's maximum storm surge in Galveston at 15 feet. The city's seawall is 17 feet. This is gonna be close.

Good luck

I hope all of can leave, makes you wonder about the old people wanting to guard all that they have in this world. It doesnt look good at all.Take Care Bobby

Bracing for the wind and rain here too!

I was fortunate with Gustav, just one vinyl facia board needed to be changed. Plenty of yard debris to pick up however. Schools were closed in SW Louisiana today, some just had two days of classes in the last two weeks. Coastal water up 4-6 ft at noon today. Houston floods so much when thare heavy rain the city is severly crippled not being able to drain as quickly as New Orleans.
