Her in AU there has long been a tradition that racehorses' birthdays are celebrated on the first of August. It doesn't matter what day the horse was really born, it officially becomes one year older on August 1.

I believe the same system happens in other countries, though the actual date may be different.

The Lort Smith Animal Shelter in Melbourne, Australia has come up with a great new idea. They propose that all "strays" (adopted pet animals) have their birthday, and that the adoptive owners and other animal lovers make a donation to the shelter, or an animal charity, on "Strays Birthday" which they have nominated as September 1 each year.

We have two ex-strays: Millie who was only a few weeks old when we found her under our house when we lived in the city, and Monty, whom we adopted form the Cat Protection Society.

I think this is a lovely idea and works both as as fundraiser, and to remind people about the plight of abandoned pets. I know there are plenty of animal lovers on this site, so I wonder if you might like to make it international, suggesting "Stray's Birthday" to your local animal shelter or charity.

They are absolutely adorable! There's nothing more serene or tranquil than cats at rest. Millie seems to be meditating.

The universal birthday idea is intriguing, but I don't know if it will catch on in the US. I don't think the 'pet gift' industry will stand for it, LOL!

thanks for telling us about that.
I started a 'family' tradition a while back which I will continue.
Without consulting us, the breeders of my generation in the family declared what sums we were to spend and for whom we were to buy presents at Christmas two years ago.
I did what I wanted, and gave whomever I wanted presents.
The explosion was enormous. How dare I be generous outside of the plans laid down for me!
So last year when the same bullshit came down the line, no consultation, just edicts, I gave my parents and the kids too young to understand nice presents. The rest got a card saying:
An animal at the local shelter has been sponsored for life in your name. Thank you!

The breeders were just as nasty as usual, but at least my money went for someone who needed it, an abandoned animal. I stipulated that the money be used for pets which are too old or ugly or whatever to have much chance of being adopted.
 
We celebrate the anniversary that our stray came into our lives. which happens to be September 15th. It'll be 7 years next month. She's still getting used to the new house and yard but should be quite comfortable by September. She's such a good girl, she had every right to be very annoyed when she got scooped up and hauled across town to her new home, but she was cruising around and exploring within 12 hours of her arrival. We couldn't ask for a better cat. Best pet I've ever had in my 53 years. And neither my partner or I were "cat people" until she found us. She'll get something special happening this year, that's for sure. Now, if we could just find the digital camera that disappeared early on in the packing process . . .
 
These are my two cats - Pie and Waffles. Waffles is at the front and Pie at the back. They are the friendliest cats I have ever met! Got them from the cats home in Kirkintilloch near Glasgow. We've had Pie a year now so were going to give the home a birthday donation to say thanks for giving us Pie.

Kinda like Greece.
You are a year old when you are born and age one year every January first. Your name-day is more important than your birthday. That is the day the saint or event that you are named after is commemoraed. (i.e. your proper Christian name).

First thing the invaders would do (in the old days) was burn down the hall of records/city hall. So getting duplicates of actual dates was a PITA. Jan one works wonders, when all are on-board!

Here your age means you lived through it and passed it (that year). Over there it meant/means you are living that year that you are celebrating. Mother Toggles would always have to tell grandpa about the grandchildren -
(s)he is "closing"- or finishing that year stated on the cake. *LOL* He could not adjust to that.

Fascinating fact about AU horses. Thank you for sharing that.

Millie in the 1st pic in the thread looks exactly like my dear Bernice that passed from the cancer in 1985. It was so heartbreaking I could never go through that again and I've been kitti-less ever since. My sister has 3 (one of which loves wagon-rides also), so I'm content just being an uncle.

I know this is an idiotic statement, but I've always been intrigued that people all over the world look so different, yet our cats and dogs all look the same. >hides head under desk<

There are 28 here at the plant and I have 12 at home. They are really no problem at all. A select few are insiders and the rest outsiders .. Most of them thrown out.. I take care of them try to find home for them and let them live their live out in peace. I have spent in 8 years over 9,000 in nuter and spaying programs for them all. Still have 1 or 2 a mo, that are new and show up.. Usually able to find homes for 2 or 3 a mo.too. So the population stays about the same.
