Rare/difficult to find?

Is there something unique about the type of screw? If the head is torn up, you may be able to use a file to clean it up a bit, but it may be easier to just source a replacement.

I had a missing lower cabinet screw on my Maytag A700. I found an exact replacement at my local True Value hardware store.

Another option. You may have to buy a box though. I second checking out your local hardware store for them. The older the store the better.

Hey Dnastrau, it's the set-in lock screw for Maytag's Power-fin and PowerFlex 12 agitators. The agitator will not stay in place once I've tightened it. It slides up the shaft while it fills. My PowerFlex 12 agitator is new and had to open the hole for the screw to sit in the spline shaft.

Robbinsandmysers, here's pic of the set-in lock screw, could it be possible to find a replacement from the link you shared?
It's an 1 inch long, hi and lo threads, narrow with a blunt tip

Thought...could the rubber washer cause the screw from locking in?

Hi low twin thread

Wow, that is unusual. It almost looks like a concrete screw but with a blunt end and a rubber sealing washer.

Lorain Furniture used to have them but are apparently out of stock.

This supplier may have what you need:

It looks like you would have to add a sealing washer, but something from them might work if you can buy one or a small box of them.

I doubt that the sealing washer is keeping it from tightening as it needs to be there based on the picture of the original, unused screw.  Could the threads in the agitator be stripped?

My main concern is are you able to snug it down tight in the agitator or is the plastic stripped out? If its stripped out you'll need to go to a larger stainless steel screw. Originals look like a #10 screw as a guess so maybe a #12 or #14 may have to be used in its place.

It is the original screw from my Power-fin agitator...thought I lost it...had been misplaced...finally found it.
I suppose the hole was stripped in my Power-fin but, it's the same lock screw needed for the PowerFlex 12 agitator.
Lorainfurniture (great guy), donated a screw but, it was too small.
My PowerFlex 12 agitator screw hole had to be made so, I don't believe the threads are stripped...agitator cannot be stripped because it's fairly new.
I'm going to clean the screw and see if it makes a difference.
Hopefully, I don't have to buy a larger replacement screw.

High low screws

These are very commonly used in plastic for their good grip.

The screw is very unlikely to strip, the plastic even in the new agitator can strip very easily, it just takes one little turn too far and it will strip if the screw is not gripping into the agitator you need a larger screw, you could also get one of the rubber lockrings and put it on the shaft and that’ll hold the agitator in place fairly well.

Hey John L, okay then maybe it is stripped...or, is this normal functioning...(the agitator slides up the shaft a bit but, the screw is prevents the full release)
I'm used to the agitator staying completely locked in without any release...am I wrong and this is normal?

John L, I meant to tell you that the PowerFlex 12 agitator does not fit with the stop ring...only the Power-fin agitator. Actually, guys, the PowerFlex 12 agitator wash action is much better than the Power-fin agitator with the (long stroke) Dependable Drive transmission. You're able to wash more laundry per water level load size to a super extra large washload. And, does a fantastic job controlling unbalance loads...the flex fins power through bunched-up laundry as it washes...even with less water...AWESOME!!!
