Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

I remember our independent TV service man showing daddy and me the chasis of one of their TVs in his shop. The picture tube was out of it and the cage that surrounded it was magnificent. It was made of 2.5 inch wide bands of steel.

Remember their audio and PA equipment-was used a lot in schools. The central PA system console in the main-principals office area. And their telephone equipment. You need a SC phone set and PA school console to go with that sign!

school system

years ago,a local school closed and was bought by someone who converted the
building to another purpose-they stripped out the 1962 vintage S/C P.A. system and
i grabbed it at the dump;consisted of a nice am/fm mono tuner,a heavy duty
turntable(vm built)two big amps,each with 2x 6550.there was also originally a
reel to reel tape deck but that was missing. This stuff is all tube, but there are
silicon"tophat"diodes in it,including the B+ for the big amps. The tuner is
really good and i use it for picking up distant AM.

SC PA system console-GREAT FIND!!Those 6550 amps could develop anywhere from 50-75W per pair of tubes!Sounds like you like to "DX" listen to distant radio stations.I GENERATE signals here for folks in other countrys to listen too!You came somewhat close to where I use to be many years ago-Rapid City,S.Dak.do the VM TT's still work?

AM DXing

yes, used to do lots of AM(and shortwave) dxing-especially around 1981-'85,but still
do it on occaision today.Around 1997-98 i used to enjoy listening to
"coast to coast AM"usually via AM 1500 minneapolis using the '62 S/C tuner
amped with a '69 14w mono heathkit amp($10 yard sale buy,was well assembled)
Since program ran later than i wanted stay up for-till around 4:00 am,i rigged up
a reel to reel recorder('69 VM built GE),set the recorder with power off and
triggered the setup to come on with a timer-worked great most of the time-
would rewind tape and play the next day.Running the recorder on lowest speed
with a 2400'tape would usually record most of the program, but i forget the exact
run time-later found out some people were doing the same thing using a VCR in"ELP"
mode to record just the sound...
In the '81-85 years liked to use old car radios for my AM DXing-a favorite was a
1958 chevy radio-still partway tube with transistor audio amp and no vibrator.
I still have the VM turntable from the school PA system-looked like it had little
use and one day i may convert it to stereo and use it as it is quite nice with it's
big 4-pole motor-not sure if the motor has the permanent magnet ring above the
induction motor section of the motor's rotor to make it "lock onto"line frequency
and run sychronus-my "daily driver"Dual turntable has this style of motor.

When I used to live in RC,SD-used to listen to KOMA out of Oklahoma city. Was a good station.I also used old car radios.these worked well to DX with.for DX'ing the best way to go is to use a radio that runs on some sort of battery.I havew had good results with a DeWalt ANALOG tune work radio-charger,NOT the newer digital one.Battery power gives less noise.
For TT's,capstan motors in various tape machines-the motor described is a "Hysteresus-synchronous" motor.Has a perm mag rotor.they can also be electronically driven.Just needs a sine wave AC power source. They can give good start torque and run stable speeds.
