This is a larger Monitor top unit that was designed as an ice maker.  The unit uses a standard single door cabinet without shelves.  A friend of mine has had this stored for years.  Once uncrated, I powered it up.  It ran fine but no cooling.  I finally got the right person to my house with some stinky so2.  We pulled a vacuum first.  I am still not sure where the first 9 lb charge went, but thankfully I don't smell it.

I am still clearing up an oil blockage in one shelf.  Once it behaves right, the 400 lbs in the crate can go get prepped and painted.

Cross your fingers that when I get home and start it that it frosts completely.

Cory,

I had a couple collectors here on Sunday to pick up things.  I had quite a list of things to do that day.  I have learned that it's easiest to let go of things while you're making progress on other things.

Wow Travis, I've never seen a Monitor Top unit like this before - definitely a great find!   Congratulations on getting it up and running again so quickly - I also would have thought that there was no one who would be willing to touch an SO2 refrigeration system these days.

It's not like you can call an appliance repair man and ask them to repair it. You have to find someone that understands for refrigeration technology and persuade them. Sometimes a sad face and a few tears helps.

Great news Travis!

Is there any other potential use for this thing once it's mounted onto a single door cabinet?  Seems like a tedious ice-making process.  Could the trays have had a special design?

Ralph,

I think it was meant to just be able to hold lots of ice cube trays.  You have to keep in mind that the standard refrigerator for that year had room for two trays.  I guess iced drinks were a big deal if a horse didn't have to bring you the ice.  This would be from 1928-31.  I only have one page of information about it.  It originally came with 12 ice cube trays.  I'm going to have to find a dozen matching trays.
