I love the pyrex perc - we had one when I was growing up. I was enthralled by the bubbles going up the stem and the first dark brown drops of coffee swirling into the water below the basket. Bear in mind that this was before the internet and cartoons were in black and white...

I also remember replacement stems and baskets available everywhere as they were easily broken during washing (I know from experience).

Be very careful if you use the corning ware perc. All their chrome top percs (electric and stove top) were recalled in the 1970s due to glue failure. You can get a serious burn if it happens when the pot is full of coffee.
 
My Mom used a Pyrex perc back in the 50's and early 60's and she was always breaking the stems. So, finally she just gave up replacing the stems and made what she called "Hobo" coffee. She would fill the pot with water, bring it to a boil and add the grounds and an egg shell, stir the mixture, remove it from the heat and let it sit for several minutes. Then she would pour it thru a small strainer into the cup. It was very good coffee. I used to have one of the Corningware electric percs, it made great coffee, but once I heard about the recall I never felt safe using it again and got rid of it.
 
I have several of the CorningWare Electromatics. I've only used one of them, however, back when I was in my using-a-percolator phase. At that time, I thought it made better coffee than the small (4? 6? cup) Farberware. But that CorningWare glue issue is a concern.
 
You can greatly minimize the potential for accidents if you only tip the pot forward to pour and not actually lift it while it is full and heavier.

That was a great price for the perk. They go for ten and more times that on eBay.

Don't get caught listing them, though! TTBOMK, the ones with glue only were part of the recall. The ones that have the wrap-around band that's held with screws to the handle are not, and are safe to use. However, even the ones that have the chromed band held to the handle by screws are banned. Their excuse in removing mine from the listings was that they banned them all because of the recall to make it easier and not take any chances. Yes, there are ways to list them and kind of get away with it, but if eBay gets a hair across their a**...

Hi Gary - good to see you :-) No cake to go with coffee?

I've found a couple of these stovetop Pyrex pots over the years, but have never used one. I used to see them at nearly every estate sale and the thrift stores were full of them, now they're few and far between. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever made coffee on the stovetop! A gaping hole in my coffee experience there.

I've had numerous Corning electric percolators with and without the glued top, never had a problem.

The only Corning pot I have now is the early Cornflower perc that Terry L. bought new, his very first coffee pot when he got his first paycheck as a teacher. He kept the pot all through the years, babied and spotless, of course.
 
I have

Tha corning perc somewhere in my storage unit..can't remember if its electric or stovetop. .this summer when I get a chance to find it whoever here that wants it i'd be glad to mail it out. I'm just not sure when ill have a chance to look for it...Cheryl
