Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

Very good detective work guys................you have to remove the inner tub to get at that...good luck....you'll need it to remove the agitator, and tub nut AND tub cover. Then maybe you can reseal the tub cover so it won't leak.

Leg up in the air.

As impractical as it sounds, it just may come to pass that the machine is turned upside-down to shake out that coin!

my a 612

my machine wasnt draining all the water out,
took the drain hose off the tub and a penny was stuck in the drain from the tub took the pliers and it slipped out no problem now she drains like a champ

Never hurt mine...

I would try it Gary. No oil ever ran out of my 58 Tag during the overhaul. I did not do the trans overhaul in this machine myself. I hauled it just like this to the appliance shop in the trunk of my 55 Cadillac. Hauled it all the way back home the same way. Not one oil spot anywhere. It laid on its side like this for several hours too.

Good luck to you guys! You have a beautiful machine there.

One try.....

Tried to tip the machine over(by myself) to no avail. Going to wait till Steve and I both work on the machine.
I think the leak at the tub seal might be related to the pump not pumping out the water and the water swirling round the top.
Today, when the machine drained after the rinse, not a drop of water leaking at the tub seal.
Will report on the next project.

Hopefully, we can get that darn coin out!

Found the culprit

Today, Toggles and I decided to get to the root of the problem. We tipped the machine over, and could hear the object in question, but it would not come out. We decided to take off the outer tub ring and Viola, we could see the object.

At first glance

It appeared as a coin.

But looking further, we found the problem

That DAMN missing lens cover.
It was in the machine, but, in the wrong place.
It was in between the inner and outer tubs.
For how long or how many years, only one can guess.

Sorry

I was posting. Forgot to log Steve out of my computer.

Anyways, can someone give me some insigight as to how to assemble the rubber gasket and clamp to secure the outer tub cover?
When we put it back together(after thorough cleaning), we had a water leak.

Is a new gasket necessary? How do you put the two pieces together properly?

That darn lens cover was there all along!

Rust

I see quite a bit of rust on the lip of that outer tub. That may need to be cleaned up and repaired to facilitate a leak free seal.

Do you think that I need to order a new tub seal gasket?

The cheap bastard in me says no, but in reality that seal may be 35+ years old so it would probably be a good idea to replace it. That seal should be in stock from one of your nearest appliance parts department.

Rubber gasket it 3 sided

One side had a slight indentation on the ring.
Please tell me how the rubber ring goes on to the tub?
Is the rubber ring placed inside the metal retainer and then put on the tub?

How does the top cover connect with the retainer ring before tightening the screws?

You can use any side of the 3 sided gasket. If you're going to reuse the old gasket, position the best looking side towards the tub for a good seal.

"Is the rubber ring placed inside the metal retainer and then put on the tub?"

Yep. At least that's how I did it. I put a little WD-40 on the gasket face that's towards the metal retainer. This prevents binding with the gasket/retainer when tightening the hell out of the retainer screws.

"How does the top cover connect with the retainer ring before tightening the screws?"

I believe I just put the tub cover on top of the outer tub, placed the retainer w/ gasket on and slightly tightened the retainer just enough to allow adequate play to perform the adjustments that are explained in posts 343525/343526

And no leaks after replacing the rubber gasket and retainer

Yep. New gasket, but I re-used the retainer ring.

Gary---

While using my A212 today I may have discovered your problem. Even though the A212 is a standard-capacity basket in this case I don't think it would make a difference.

During the beginning of the first spin all the water was pumped out and the basket reached full speed as normal. When the spray-rinse began I noticed the pump cavitated until the water level in the bottom of the outer tub started to make contact with the underside of the basket-----which started to stir-up sudz. Almost at the same moment the pump suddenly pumped out all the water and kept the sump empty the remainder of the spray-rinse.

If there had been a heavy load of towels in there I have no doubt it would have sudz-locked----especially if I had used some Viva.

Hopefully this will shed some light on your particular situation. It may just be a design issue.

Steve

Thanks for your input. I really believe that the lens cover was covering the drain hole during the spray rinse and not letting the water drain out. When the spray rinse ended, I heard something clanging around in the tub which had to be that darn lens cover.

The issue with the machine now is getting the outer tubs back together. When Steve and I put the rubber gasket back on the machine and tightened the metal retainer ring, we had some leaking issue. I have ordered a new rubber gasket tub ring and hopefully, this will solve the leaking problem during spin. I have been advised to put WD 40 on the rubber ring. Someoene also suggested rubber silicone. Any suggestions for putting the two outer tubs back together to prevent leaking?

Something strange happened yesterday during the start of spin. The motor hesitated a bit, then went into the spin cycle. I was told that a possible contact was sticking and to give it a light spray of WD 40. What are your thoughts on this?

I would love to get this machine back in full operation and use it as my daily driver.

I'm glad you figured out the problem.

As for the motor contacts----I prefer contact cleaner. Be sure anything you do has a chance to completely dry before you run that motor!

To elaborate a bit, the machine switches back and forth a few times between the "run" and "start" windings, until it finally starts to get going.

One issue begets another! *UGH*

Someoene also suggested rubber silicone.

I forgot to mention this. I didn't need any, but the last person to service my 702 used a ton on the cover seal and tub bolts. It didn't leak in either one of those areas so I guess it works without problems. Personally, I would use sealer that is intended for fish tanks. Some sealers out there are so damn caustic that they're a death sentence.
