filter style is a matter of preference.....I like the fold over type....in a bind, a paper towel works just as good...

I think these make some of the best perked coffee....

thats a beautiful unit you got there.....

miss the days when you find in every kitchen, shiny chrome appliances displayed on counter tops....coffee maker, toaster, mixer, blender.....a quick spray with Windex, and buff to a high shine!

Ralph, my Mom used a Pyrex stove top percolator too, and she would invariably break either the stem, basket, or both when washing the dishes ( this was before we kids were old enough to to the dishes) and then she would make what she called “Hobo or Okie” coffee, like what is described in Tim’s link. I recall that she would also drop the egg shell into the pot too.

Heres’ a bit of trivia. If you’ve ever seen the 1947 movie “The Farmers Daughter” with Loretta Young, she is a young Swedish girl that becomes employed by a wealthy family, and they ask her to make coffee, directing her to a glass vacuum pot. She says, “Ya, but I make coffee, but not with this, I make real coffee”, and she proceeds to make coffee the Swedish way in an old fashioned enameled pot, and its a raging success. This is also a very good movie, one of James Arness’s (Marshall Dillion from Gunsmoke), first screen appearances in a bit part as her hunky Swedish brother.

BTW, I in no way meant to disparage anyone’s choice of filter, I just prefer to make perked coffee filterless if the basket has small enough holes to keep a lot of grounds from getting into the finished brew. It’s a matter of personal preference, I like the flavor the oils give to the coffee, but thats just me.🙂

Thanks Tim.

As I read the article I remember more of my friends Mom making coffee. I remember the cold water at the end. I am going to have to try this tomorrow. I remember how much I enjoyed her coffee. I don't remember if she put the shells in or not.

Thanks for finding it.

My great-aunt Grace always made her egg coffee in a large white enamel pot w/ red trim which was given to me several years ago by my cousin.

This model of the Sunbeam electric percolators doesn’t have a diffuser over the basket, the lid locks to the top of the pot by turning it, so the grounds don’t drift into the brew if the basket isn’t removed before pouring. The Poly Perk electric percolators are like this too.

My mom went through three Sunbeam percolators through my childhood and until I was in my 20's. They were perfect for the Bridge games she had in our house. I had to use lots of cream to dilute mine, and pull the spoon out quickly so it wouldn't corrode and dissolve because of the percolator coffee. When drip models first surfaced that could be set to perk first thing in the morning, the percolators lost favor with her. As far as the bridge games went, I missed seeing my mom's friends with dilated pupils and caffeine hand tremors.

This is one of the coffeemakers I have -- bought it for $3.00 at a thrift store. It works perfectly and really looks like new. I did have to replace the cord. I really like it, but at 600 watts, when I got it, I would have preferred an older Faberware model with more watts, which makes coffee faster. But, in the end, I have adjusted to the 20 minutes, and really like the coffee. I use the disc coffee filters from a hardware store.

OMG Eugene #Rinso thank you for that description. I love the ending about the dilated pupils and caffeine hand tremors.

This brings back some great memories. My Mom used to talk about the time she had set up the tables for her card group. She had to run to the store for something and she told my Dad "Watch Ralph, I have to run to the store. I have everything set up for later." Well, I guess he fell asleep on the sofa and I destroyed the room. I was known to be a handful when I was younger. I remember the ladies with the dark red lipstick and the lip prints on napkins. They would smoke a filterless cigarette and then load up their lips with the dark red lipstick. Then they pinch their lips on the folded napkin to get rid of the extra. My Mom never smoked but I remember many of her friends did.

I still have the percolator she used on special occasions and of course her card club. It still works and once in a while I make a pot in it just to remember.

Thanks for bringing back a great memory!!
