I went to Lowe's and picked up a plug for the T-35 that Mixfinder sent to me. Took all of 10 minutes to fix it.

Plugged it in. (heart starts pounding. Grabbed a slice of bread... the moment of truth. put it in the slot.. Without fanfare, the bread lowered into the toaster and the coils came on and the smell of burnt dust filled the air (must've not run in a long time).

WHEW!!! But that's only half the story. Is it going to shut off too soon, will it burn the toast, one can only guess.

"Click!"

The coils shut off and the toast slowly rose out of the slot, perfectly toasted and ready for some peanut butter.

(ok, Breathe, relax)

It's a keeper. Thanks again, Kelly for such a wonderful gift.

Now all it needs is a little lubrication because it was kinda lethargic coming back up. Any suggestions?

Good to hear it works! My T-20B slowly rises, possibly 4 seconds, once the toast is done. I'm not sure if it is supposed to be that long - or a bit shorter, but I sure like it better than a *POP*!

Yeah, I guess that was the point to have it come up sllooowwwwlllyy instead of ejecting them into orbit.

There's no motor or none that I could hear, so I wonder just how does it work?

Rise Again?

Jason,
An electromagnet pulls it down. When the contacts break at the setting desired, a spring raises the toast. The springs is in the center of the heating elements and can be adjusted with counterclockwise turns in half turn increments. Check the rise of the actionary lever. If it is at the top of the channel, when off, the spring is properly adjusted.
Glad it worked.
Kelly

I posted a long post, sometime back, explaining the nuances of the toaster and how to do a tune up.

is this the Sunbeam Toastermatic? The one that lowers the bread into the slot by itself?

These were sold in AU, I assume the USA ones work the same. The toast it lowered as follows:
When you put the bread in the slot the bread presses on a wire lever which trips a switch which turns on the heating elements. As the element heats up a spring warms and softens. The spring holds the bread supports so as the spring warms and weakens, the bread lowers into the slots. After the toast is done, the element switches off and the spring cools, regaining its tension and thus the bread (now toast) rises again.
Because of this method, the toast always rises slowly and gently - this is completely normal. I think it is much more elegant than the cheap toasters that just about throw the toast out.

And reliable too

There's no motor involved. All this time I thought it was a motor. Nope, just a magnet and springs. I'm sure this was a magical thing for a kid to see the toast go down without any motor noise.

The only noise it makes is the usual AC hum and a little creaking as the coils heat. At the end is a simple click and the toast comes up.

Now it's in the closet with all the other wedding presents waiting to be moved into their new home.

Still haven't gotten my Pyrex percolator yet :( . I guess it's still in transit, but I WANT IT NOW!!!!!! (Veruca Salt style)

Hey, I just saw the post about the tune up. From what I saw the toaster acted normally. It started, toasted and brought the toast up as it should.

I could imagine people throwing this away because they thought "The motor doesn't work anymore".

Bread size

I checked the springs on the toaster and everything is at the top of the track. I tried to toast some bread yesterday. It started and lowered fine but had a hard time coming back up. Could it be the bread itself or do I need to adjust the spring a litte?

Can you only used thin sliced bread with this toaster?

Pull it out, its too big!

Jason,
If the slices of bread are hitting on the sides, it will keep the carriage from returning to the lifted position.

If anyone is interested...

There is a buy it now for $40 on this model. I would bid but tight right now between the spaceship and various auto projects. Geez, I hate it when I am $40 tight!

If your toaster lasts as long as our T-20 it will be the only one you will ever need. The date stamped on the inside of ours says 4/26/56. I can't imagine anything made today lasting that long, and remaining trouble free besides.
