Re:

When did Frigidaire stop using "bouncy" agitators?

This brings up a sore spot around here... In 1979 GM sold off Frigidaire to WCI who did not adopt the same mechanism as the Real Frigidaire, instead replacing it with internals made by Westinghouse.

There was still a Frigidaire 1-18, but it was not GM sourced and had an oscillating agitator and indexing tub. I hear they were hell to work on and didn't clean as well. I'm generally disgusted at the sight of one even though they now are also vintage machines.

It's a shame they don't make them anymore

You have no idea how much I wish they still did. High standards and real quality are a rare find these days.

This is so very, very true. Appliance manufacturers could learn alot from the older designs. My mother's boss has a Maytag washer and dryer from the early 70's I think, and his stove and refrigerator (don't know the brand) are avocado green and still run perfectly. The stove has a double oven, smaller one on top and full size on the bottom. He's in a nursing home at the moment, doesn't know when he will be coming home, due to a hip injury.

IIRC, GM decided it was not worth the effort to spend money retooling and making new dies for production, and neither did WCI.

GM like others who got out of the appliance business early, saw where things were going, that is a trend towards being a consumer good, rather than a "major" investment. Small wonder why today a handful of companies own most of the major brand names.

Thanks Jet! I really appreciate all the kind comments. I felt a little gawdy about putting more pics of this machine on here because I've featured it here on several occasions, but I really wanted to share. Guys I'd love to see pics of your Frigidaires on this thread, please feel free to add your pictures to this thread, let's all celebrate the machines that we love!

Overflow, I sure do miss having this machine hooked up! Nothing beats it for sheer viewing pleasure.
