Does anyone know much about Sunray stoves? I have only encountered two or three. We rented a house on a lake for a week during the summer of 1994. It had a gas Sunray range, that looked to be from the 70s. I later saw a similar if not the same range in a thrift store.

Also, what was the relation between them and Caloric and Glenwood? I saw photos of a Sunray electric apt size stove that looked just like a Glenwood that was in a beach motel we stayed at in 2006. I have also seen Calorics that looked very similar.

Apparently Sunray stoves was based in Delaware Ohio as in doing a Google search I saw where they have a reunion for the employees there. They must be an old company as I also saw photos of old Sunray ranges with some interesting designs.

In the mid-60s, my parents bought a Sunray gas range to replace our old Tappan. The Sunray had two ovens, one in the conventional location below the cooktop; and a second, smaller oven suspended above the cooktop a couple of feet. It was painted a dark brown, which I liked a lot. They kept it until they moved to the cabin on the lake when they retired, and I think it was sold with the house. Over time the upper oven stopped functioning, but the pilot would still burn. So it remained useful for keeping things warm. The model was "Riviera". I have no pictures of that stove, although it may be in the background of some which were taken of people in the kitchen. I was unable to find any images of it on Google.

Sunray Ranges

At one time were probably pretty good, but by the 1970s they were scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of quality.

Raytheon-Coloric purchased the company in the 1980s so Caloric could compete on price with other companies that were selling cheap carp [ Magic Chef, Tappan, Wellbuilt and brands like Vesta, Peerless, Premiere ] Raytheon continued to sell ranges made in the Sunray plant under both the Sunray and Caloric names at least through the 1990s.

Sunray was never part of WCI, and I guess that technically it is now part of WP, LOL, although I think the Sunray plants long since been closed.

Magic Chef

Magic Chef ranges seemed to be popular in mobile homes in the 70s-90s, but I never saw them other than in those really. They were always very plain, manual clean, no clock or timer. In the 70s it was typically gas wall ovens and cooktops, then in the 80s gas ranges and in the 90s electric.

Tappan I never saw much of here. The newest one I ever saw was a smooth top self clean that looked like a Frigidaire or Kenmore but had the Tappan name. It was from maybe the late 2000s.

Some experience...

Had a twenty-inch Sunray electric in an old apartment. The oven ran 75 degrees too hot. Otherwise it was a typical apartment stove, servicable but nothing to write home about.
