superba 22?

But I'm used to KDS-17/18/19 etc, not KUDS...whats with the KUDS?? Is it midwestern?

I see one of these for sale, is it a Hobart machine or a transition whirlpool machine?

KUDS22 is a ~1992 Superba. I have one, currently being used by my sister.

It's a pretty cool machine.

Series 22 has touches of Whirlpool -- reversing motor -- but has heated Flo-Thru drying and a sump heater for water, new-style lower rack with plates to the side, classic 16-position upper rack with adjustable dividers.

The first fill on Pots/Pans & Normal is delay-heated to 140°F.

Sani Rinse heats by time, is not delayed to a specific temperature.

Pots/Pans has three wash periods, heats twice in the first wash with a spray & soak period. It may heat in the 2nd wash as well, don't recall, been too long since I last used the machine.

I would keep that baby just the way she is. It's a fabulous dishwasher. I recently picked up a KUDS22 Superba Selectra (the electronic version of this machine), almost new, hardly ever used - for $50. It really does do a good job. It's the Hobart design, with some Whirlpool influences. Love it. It's not a tall tub, but not too many challenges getting things to fit thanks to the shape of that upper rack. Most tall things like broiler pans, cutting boards, etc., fit fine along the sides of the lower rack.

The big difference with the Selectra series is that you can actually turn off the water pre-heating in every cycle if you want, it has a nifty energy and temp monitor that tells you how hot the water is inside the machine, and how much energy your selected cycle is going to use via bar graph.

Yup - My daily driver too!

Even with the black panels as this one has. The model number is KUDS22TO1. The last digit has some significance (I remember that being mentioned here a year ago or better) but it's the same machine. Those who've heard about it will know, it was salvaged from the sidewalk for trash pickup! Makes me wonder if it was replaced by anything even close...

The question is, how difficult is it to convert it to a portable?

I've read the instructions for converting a portable to a builtin, but what about the other way around?

It may not be abuse, but simply adjustments to fit tall or awkward pieces. We often bend the tines in our DW to accomodate bowls, pots and baking pans.

question about racks

On partsselect.com, the racks for KDS21 are NLA but the racks for KUDS220T4 are available. Is this rack compatible with KDS18-21 models?

Picked it up today

I had a good 5hr sunday drive and picked up this DW today.

It looks nice. No problems with the tub or any obvious distress on the mechanicals that I can see. The screen on the pump top is still intact.

Problems include the split rails on the upper rack and some chrome off of the buttons.

Any series 22 upper racks looking for a home? Send me your buttons, racks, and series 18-20 portable cases, or links to the same. I'm hoping to turn this one into a portable, and a kitchenaid case would be great (since I'm familier with my KD57 unit's case).

These trips make one a bit fatigued. 2000 T&C minivan got 27-28 mpg on the trip @ 60, not too bad really. so why do crossovers only get 23 mpg hy???

I have KDS-18 racks

I have KDS-18 racks. They are in very good condition. They are compatible. Hopefully Steve T will tell us the differences between KDS-18 & KDS-22 racks.

The Lower racks of the 18-22 series machines are virtually identical. The 18 had 13 rows of tines on the left side so you could get 14 plates down the side and the later machines had 12 so you could fit a larger bowl or other piece in the back.The side tines were configured differently on the 18 as well; more of them closer together. The 19 thru 22 were all the same. The lower racks on the 22 and 23's were basically the same setup but it had the removable set of tines on the left side which allowed for large pots and pans to be placed in the lower racks without bending the tines. It also would be able to be placed in one of two positions in the rack to give more room on the right side. Seems dopey to me but I guess that was wehat the public wanted. There were also some minor variations in the placement of one tine which kept the silverware basket from moving around. It was removed when they went to the really big, nearly full width silverware rack. I like that rack because it really gives the silverware a place to be with loads of room for the water to get at it and clean them.

The top racks, by now most of you know are different yet the same!
We all know that the original 18 racks had the smaller diameter washarm under the rack which was obsoleted and replaced by the 19 series which had the bigger arm which did the corners better. This was used thru the 23 series with some minor variations. With the 21's some came with or without the china guard depending on the model level. With the 22 series, they had flattened out the fron of the top rack which accomodated the small wares basket nicely and could hold a small pot there or bowl in a flat position.

If my memory is correct, the 23 series which notably did away with the Kitchenaid designed washpump assy and went to the WP powermodule had the same upper rack as the 22 but was mounted to the sides of the tank using the whirlpool mounting channels so you might have to change the rack adjusters if you got a rack like that and tried to use it in an earlier unit.
