Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Thanks Mark

My KUDS22 upper rack has split the rubber along the rail, as I hear is normal. So the replacement I'm seeking would correct that fault.

My bottom rack is in good shape

Stevet -
Can I install the long spray arm from my 22 upper rack, onto the 18 upper rack? Thus having the corner coverage?

Give it whirl!

I think you should be able to make the changeover since you will have all the hardware you need. What's the worst that can happen? You just put the 22 racks in it and get the repair kit and fill in the broken areas and hope for the best.
It has been so long since I messed around with any of these racks but I think it is a do-able task.

OK Steve....you missed something!! How come with the 23 Series Superba, I could not fit my everyday dishes with the upper rack in the second position, yet in the 22 series Superba, the damned things fit fine?? Is there a difference in the racks or the clearance of the racks? I assume it's the same tank between the two models with identical clearances. Did they change something with the racks or rack clearances? I found the 23 cleaned better than the 22 does, especially pots and pans, because they cycle times were vastly different. But fitting things into the 22 is a little easier. All my dishes fit with the upper rack in the second position. What's different?

All in the game!

Andrew,
Like I mentioned, the 23 had the Whirlpool tracks to hold the rack in place even though it still had the adjustable racks. I think they were mounted lower that the previous models. That may account for it. Also, it had the power module pump which was a good system and with the longer cycle times, it would definitely do a better cleaning job. I think they tinkered too much with the 22 times and that is why sometimes the results weren't what we would expect. Did the 23 have more than one rinse or was it like the 22? I could swear I had more than one rinse on the 22 I had in Valley Stream. In fact I took the 18 down here because it had the 3 rinses and the 22 had only 2. At least the one I had up there definitely had 2 distinct rinse and I always used the Sani cycle on it so maybe that added the 2nd rinse. Maybe someone here has the service manual with the cycle time charts and get a difinitive answer opnce and for all.
Enjoy the 4th!

Nope, both the 22 and 23 had only one rinse. The 23 omits the rinse between the first and second wash, too, and just does a purge. The second wash on the 23 on both Normal and Pots/Pans is 20 minutes long (or so). I believe that's heated. The Whirlpool tracks would explain the clearance problem. While it wasn't a huge difference, it made a substantial difference in loading ease on that machine. The 22 actually holds a good variety of different sized items pretty easily. Just needs an extra rinse and longer wash.

23 racks

You're right, Steve; the 23 uses the Whirlpool mounting rails and when I went to put the rack from my 22-series Superba in the 23 I had found, I was surprised to find the rack rollers were different sizes--so I had to do a huge transplant of the rails and rollers from the 23 rack back onto my 22 rack so that I could have the nice metal wash-arm and china guard, as opposed to the plastic upper wash arm and no-china guard of the 23.

The things we do :-)

It is our passion!

Yes, Nate, the things we do for our love of these vintage machines. I was lucky enough to find a Selectra 23 but alas, the controller was bad and they are no longer available so I trashed the unit. Not that I would have paid what they wanted for it.I saved the bottom rack but it isn't in very good condition. By then WP had really cheaped out on the rack coating and most machines of that vintage have junked out racks and really badly chipped porcelain inside. Looks like they had even made that thinner!
I can't even begin to understand why they went to such an extent to redesign the 23's for such a short period of time instead of just continuing on with the 22 style with an upgraded model number and cycle selections. The racks weren't the only redo.. the motor itself has a smaller diameter mounting hole so you cannot swap it into an earlier 21 or 22.Just seems like a really costly machining process to do with a whole new bottom assembly. I guess a machine shop could make an insert for it but then you would have to change the washarm too. Unless others are like us and save stuff from machines we are forced to trash!
