I thought for sure someone would buy this very nice, almost like new General Electric Americana refrigerator listed on ebay for $299.99. As of 7:00 PM PDT it only has about 10 hours left. In Buffalo NY...Collectibles/Kitchen & Home/Large Appliances.

Oh well...now that I read the entire ad I guess I'm not all that surprised. Doesn't get cold, seller thinks it may be the compressor. I guess it would still make a nice insulated spice cabinet or lighted cupboard for dog food.

People don't realize that if a refrigerator doesn't get cold, for the majority of the population that makes it nothing more than heaping helping of crusher food.  I guess they don't have a clue about the special equipment and expertise required to change out a compressor, and that for a vintage fridge, finding a good compressor with the right specs would be a project in and of itself.

Too bad.  You don't see Americanas in white very often.  My guess is that these TOL refrigerators were purchased in most cases for tricked out and color coordinated kitchen remodels, and that white was probably not a big seller.

"It's just gotta be the compressor..."

If I had a penny for every time I had a customer say that... It's amazing how many malfunctions are caused by that pesky compressor! Seriously, with the exception of early Amanatags with the crappy Brazilion sourced Tecumseh compressor which craps out frequently, I almost never shoot an appliance for a bad compressor. It could also be the temperature control, start relay, defrost timer or the like...

By the way, according to the majority of my customers, ALL dryer malfunctions are caused "by the timer thing", washer malfunctions are ALL caused by the transmission, everything including the oven light not working is the fault of the thermostat and EVERY problem a microwave has can be fixed by replacing "the magnetron thingy"... Aarrrgghhh!

G.E compressors of this or maybe a slightly earlier time period did become inefficient to the point of not cooling even though they ran when hooked to electricity. Our 18.8 cu. ft. Spacemaker purchased in 1961 or 62 had that happen in the 70s. The compressor was replaced and it is still working in my basement.

Tom:

There was a GE compressor problem for a while in the late '50s and early '60s. Our '58 GE Combination had to have a new compressor sometime around '64. Never gave any trouble after that, and a good thing too - Mom was still complaining about the cost of that repair long after the Combination went to Reefer Heaven. She ditched it still running (well, barely); she wanted an Americana with ice and water in the door.

We won't go into the saga of the Americana's repairs to that ice and water system. It's in the garage now.
