Suspension on my Miele W1926

The Miele seems to be unhappy. Makes lots of noise when launching into a spin. So, time to inspect. Looks like I need new struts. I suspect the black clip I supposed to be attached to the strut, and I don't think one is supposed to see the grease inside.

The part number on your washing machine shock absorber (4411610) shows up in the list of "alternative part numbers" in this UK listing. (Which I found by google searching "Miele 4411610.")

They are not genuine Miele parts, but the price is right.

 

A rough check of shockers - disconnect from power, remove the top panel ("lid") of the washing machine. Press down firmly on the top of the drum a few times, try to gauge the resistance. It should not wobble around easily, you should feel some firmness against your pressing down. If one side presses down easier than the other, the soft side probably has a weak shocker.

 

For banging noise leading up to spin, you need to check for a broken drum spider - open the washing machine door, try lifting the drum inside, see if the inner, perforated stainless steel drum (basket) is able to move relative to the outer drum.

The whole drum assembly should be able to move around, that is OK, but you are looking for the basket moving around inside the outer drum. If it moves, it often feels "floppy" and may be accompanied by some grating/crunching sounds.

A broken spider is probably terminal.

Left side struts on these older Miele washers aren't as easily accessed compared to right due to various bit in way. Miele designed these washers to be serviced from front or top, but sometimes getting to part in question isn't always easy.

For tools aside from struts themselves all you need is a ratchet set (with extension) along with proper metric sized fitting. Whack it onto a drill and you're good to go.

FWIW one can swap out shocks from bottom of washer, but that involves tipping unit over onto side.

You want to sort out strut situation sooner rather than late. Leaving things too long may cause damage to other bit of suspension; those springs and grips that hold tub suspended between cabinet.

Over years via too much tub action the two supports that springs hook into were gone or shot and one of springs was damaged. This was last major repair on my old Miele, and it took two grown men better part of two hours (moaning and swearing much of the time) to swap out all four springs and hooks. Tech said it had to be done when diagnosed problem otherwise "metal would be scrapping on metal".

Job was not easy even for two men. One had to "lift" tub to create enough slack so spring could be unhooked from tub. Spring swapped out at cabinet with hook/support replaced, then tub again lifted so new spring could be hooked onto tub. Rinse, lather and repeat times four. One tech got a nasty gash across his knuckles for his efforts.

There are of course other ways of getting apart or at insides of older Miele washers.

Thanks for the info, all. The machine only makes noise sometimes, I'll check for a busted spider in a bit. I suspect it's more in the realm of bad dampening.

I don't see the UK listing but I see some stuff on eBay, I'll try those. Hoping the size is right.

I'd check with MieleUSA parts first to see if they have in stock. If so after all is said and done may not be that much more than ordering from overseas.

One clear indication shock dampers are going or gone on a front loader is if glass porthole is scratched up along bottom. This come from tub leaping about more than it should since it's not being restrained property by worn or gone shocks. Glass porthole on my Miele was roughed up something awful. When tech came out to diagnose issue he pointed out damage and said yes, your shocks are gone.

Even if just the one is damaged tech said it's best to swap out both and be done.

New shocks seem to have made the machine much happier. Now, to replace the flakey cold water valve.

How did job go?

Replacing shocks on older Miele washers isn't always a picnic, but easily doable with proper tools, time and patience.

Need to replace hot water valve on my Miele W1070. Have had new one laying about spare for year or so now (nabbed off fleaPay), but just haven't bothered.

Honestly, I expected the job to be harder! The right side was easier by far, seeing as the pump was in the way on the other side. I got the right on and almost had the left on, but needed the husband to wiggle the tub into position. I'd unscrewed the pump from the bottom frame to make room.

The machine seems to be having a hard time filling for rinse, so I suspect the cold valve. It occasionally seems to end the cycle at around 50 minutes, and it seems that cold water is only tricking in. I checked the inlet and it seems fine and clear.

You'll want to sort out the triple water valve situation sooner rather than later.

It is possible with older vintage Miele washers to work around hot water valve not working by just going with "cold fill". OTOH the triple cold water valve feeds pre-wash, main wash and rinse cycles.

Wow, I wonder if sears even has that part. If so, that's an eyewatering price. More than I paid for the set twice over.

Indeed, an electrical mishap with the same valve on my previous machine lead to its demise.

I've searched that part number and come up empty on all the sites you mentioned for the shocks, for the site I bought them from, and eBay and amazon. I'm not seeing a way to search on Miele directly.

The other thread you mentioned is exactly the same symptom I'm having, red and blinky at rinse.

New inlet valve needed

Hi Eric, if you post pictures of the old inlet valve, we may have some thing that will fit Jason his fixed a couple of these Meiles that had very expensive inlet valves.

In some cases the valve can be taken apart and fixed, is yours a 240 or 120 V machine ?

Appreciate that, John. I am a little gun-shy on subbing parts because the last Miele we had died after an electrical incident with an inexpensive valve. I believe the part is 240v as well.

I bit the bullet and bought the Miele part. Still plan on getting some pictures when we dig in, though.
