Sweden's Electrolux to buy GE appliances

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

No More....

New GE-branded appliances for me, and no GE services, such as their financial services.

I am appalled that General Electric would forsake its flagship consumer product line and undo all the progress it had recently made on bringing some appliance manufacture back to the U.S. in this fashion.

Vintage GE? Yes. New? Absolutely not.

Totally agree...

the last GE we bought was a d/w 3 yrs ago... and it will be the VERY last. Whirlpool and SQ from now on... very happy with 5 yr and 7 yr old Whirlpool washers and 3 yr old Whirlpool fridge, all US made. No GE for us, henceforth, except, as noted, vintage. So what will become of poor Louisville?

I'm bummed

Just bought a GE range a year ago, as I thought they were starting to show promise as a leader in consumer appliances again. Guess they were just trying to drive up their asking price.

OMFG!!!!! 1978  revisited. Let us hope that Electricfucks doesn't get stupid like they did when WCI bought FRIGIDAIRE or Whirlpool when they bought Maytag.

Curse the luck! After 20 years of purchasing (mostly) Frigidaire appliances, I was in the market for a new brand: GE. And what are they going to become? Frigidaire clones.

Whirlpool or Maytag would seem obvious alternatives, but I haven't met a Whirlpool range I've liked in the past 20 years, nor am I enamored of their refrigerators or dishwashers. And today's Maytags are no more real Maytags than are my Electrolux-made 'Fraudgidaires' real Frigidaires.

I feel like it's closing time at the bar and I'm thinking, "You know, maybe that LG over there isn't so bad..."

:-)

You knew right? Electrosux sold through WCI under not only the Frigidaire name, but GE and another (forgot) in 1998. Gawd only knows what since then.

Next thing you know, Sweden will sell Electrosux to China just like they did with Volvo. What's the difference? It's already MADE in China no matter WHAT it is.

Rick-- I knew GE's front-loader and it's matching dryer were made by Electrolux back in the early 2000's. Did that agreement extend to other appliances as well? Electrolux makes chest and upright freezers for a number of brands, but don't know if that included GE.

Those washers were the original-design machines with a 3.0 cu. ft. tub. I had a 1996 (front-controls) model and a 2002 model (rear control panel). Both are still doing laundry in others' homes, although the '96 had a bearing replacement. The same washers were sold under the Gibson brand, as well.

The washers weren't bad, but the companion dryers, with their tiny 5.5 cu. ft. drums and postage stamp-sized lint filers were awful. Over time, a gap would develop at the front of the drum that snagged and caught items like shirts, which would twist into a rope and tear during the cycle.

I only 'happen' to 'know' the GeneralElectroFrigiWhite by virtue of owning the FL washer from 1998. Completely satisfied, everything it does makes sense and it has never broken. Spray plus 3 or 4 (selectable) fill rinses, tap hot washes, 800 spin, NO electronics except the motor speed module and that never broke either.

The only thing it does 'wrong' is abort spins with awkward loads unable to balance. The timer doesn't know the motor module is sensing imbalance so 'time marches on' and inter-rinse spins can get skipped. Doesn't trouble me, if I put an awkward load in it I hang around like I learned to do with slant Westys and Whirlpools, redistributing/restarting if needed.

I MUCH prefer a machine that doesn't think it's smarter than I am. The Frigi is in storage as this building has no place/hookup. In fact, 'real' washers are forbidden. I currently use a new Chinese twintub, completely satisfied with that too. It's not a Spiralator but then today nothing is.

NTGOT,   The GE frontload washer with the V shaped door was on sale at HD all weekend  for less than $700 as a close out.    They must of met their goal to reduce the item in stock.  Today's  price is back up to approx.  $1300.

Ben, I think Baldwin's graph is correct.
