T/L westys,neutral drain?

haven't looked over one in years,but i remember these having
a solenoid to pull the clutch belt's idler pulley against the
belt-i presumed this was to allow the the motor to run for a
neutral drain,but watching washers on youtube these seemed to
be spin drain...considering how dinky the belts are on these
compaired to franklins,maytags,and "marathon"speedqueens,seems
these westinghouses would really eat belts doing a spin drain..
 
There were neutral drain models offered along with the standard spin-drain. I have service & parts manuals from Westinghouse showing both but no reason for the neutral-drain machines is really given IIRC. The spin-drain machines I've had had a clutch at the base of the transmission.
 
My previous machine was an electrolux/ frigidaire T/L. It had a neutral drain with a separate motor/pump.
 
WESTINGHOUSE TL WASHERS

WH did build some of thier early TL washers with a PRE PUMP SOLENOID to allow the washer to drain before really going into spin. They also had a kit to add this feature to some machines to correct problems with poor belt life, out of balance load and vibration problems, leaking machines [ water being thrown over the tub in the start of spin cycle and scum and lint redepositing problems. But by the early 1970s the cost cutters eliminated these extra parts and the machine went on being the worst automatic washer of the decade. We used to run a lot of service calls on these and there were only two parts that we would replace on them, either the belt or the inlet valve almost any other repair was too expensive and not worth doing. I would place GE TL washers [ since 1995 ] in about the same category except the GEs work better but a lot of them are trashed before they reach 5 years of age. Junk is nothing new in the appliance world thats why many Norges, Westinghouse and Franklin built machines are so rare now as many were trashed long before they reached the 10 year mark.
 
hopefully when i add a T/L westy to the fleet it will be a
neutral drain version-also would be cool if it has the 4-port
black turbine pump instead of the seemingly more common 3-port
white centrifugal pump.Ramp agitator too,instead of the
3-vane filter agitator that seems to be common on monkey wards
versions.
Found a really nice '78T/L westy at the dump in '83,tray filter
,black pump,belt solenoid,blue ramp, the works...
took the motor/pump,idler,belt and motor capacitor.
still have the belt..
These do remind me of a cross between a norge and a franklin
with possibly a whiff of 1-18 and filter flo thrown in the mix
