I bought a Kitchenaid dishwasher for my daughter in Kansas to replace a BOL GE in their house.  They are moving to Dallas and the new owners of the house in Kansas are replacing all the appliances with stainless steel.  They told Mike and Sara if they want to take the existing appliances they are welcome to do so.  Mike and Sara can have the dishwasher shipped to Dallas when they move.  I am flying down to get them settled and then bringing back a car of ours they have been using.  Bringing back the dishwasher would be easy.  Is it worth it?  What are longevity and performace expectations for this machine?

Kelly, that looks like the first series of Tall Tubs.  I wouldn't go out of my way.  It should stay in Kansas.  Besides, I loooked at the real estate listing and the appliances at the house look pretty descent.

Direct Hit

I respect your input and appreciate your help.  Mike and Sara have liked it without any issues but unless they use Sani or Heavy cycles the silverware doesn't come as clean as they would like.  This will leave the trunk of Lexus wide open for those amazing bargains I might find along the trip.

Why waste it?

I would say this:
These are not your Mom"s Kitchenaids by any stretch of the imagination! But if the machine is mworking okay now, why not take it and keep it as a spare? It won't cost much to ship or load on the moving truck as it barely weighs a bit over 100 lbs.

Yeah, the pump's life is questionable as I have gotten many of them from people who trashed them at about 4 years of life and fixed them and sold them. I say take it and sell it down there..found money!

App, this looks like a bit newer than the original tall tbs.. my machine is a KUD02 series and the front is nearly the same and the 3 series carried over the same look.

I think it is a very good washer but did find it to work better by changing out the 4 way Hydrosweep with the Whirlpool/Kenmore lower arm for these machines. The Hydrosweep is not wide enough to get the silverware clean and the corners could use more water volume.
The Kenwhirl arm is longer and has more holes in it and focuses the water more powerfully along the perimeter of the rack. Remember, the WP arm has to get enough water into the silverware basket on the door so it throws more water out the ends. The same thing works in the KA rack. We noticed immediately that the silverware was not coming clean so that was when I changed the arm and the problem went away.

I have never had any food left on the dishes since last October and rarely use the hi temp or heavy duty wash. We usually use the normal or light wash. I do use phosphated detergent so that could be a factor too.
I scrape the dishes and put them right in the machine and get great results, while my wife will scrape and rinse first. She just won't change but that is fine since these machines cannot handle too much debris and the pumps get clogged too easily. And they can clog up and wash poorly pretty quickly in their service lives.

Cheap and Easy Pickup

The dishwasher can be added to the moving van taking their belongings from Kansas City to Dallas at no extra cost.  My son in law is the VP for eship in Dallas.  I am flying down to help them settle in the new house and ride heard on my three granddaughters.  I will be driving back in a Lexus that belongs to us.  The dishwasher would ride home in the trunk and replace a GE currently in use.  The GE is great but the Kitchenaid bears the prestige of it's nameplate and is a tall tub.  It's sounding like more trouble than it's worth if it requires retrofit to perform as well as my GE.

It will be no big deal to replace the GE except that with the tall tub design, it can be a bit tight under the Kitchenaid or any tall tub for that matter. When I installed mine, I attached the water hose to it first and then fed it back thru the cabinet and had lots of extra romex cable to attach to the terminal box before pushing the unit back under the cabinet. If you just take your time, it will go really easy and be worth the effort.
Then connect the straps to secure it to the counter and you will be all done.
