Robert,
I would like to thank you for creating and maintaining this site. Without you and your efforts, I may never have been able to put together what may be the closest match possible to the washer and dryer my family bought new in 1965. My parents moved into our first house, purchased in 1965 and they bought a GE1050X washer and GE1020 dryer in turquoise. Although those models were at least a couple years old by then, they must have been on sale to clear them out of their stock, at Burnham's Appliance store, on Sheridan Drive, Amherst NY.(The store is long gone).
When I saw Robert's posting of this washer, I emailed him and he provided the seller's info. It took about a week to confirm the deal and then another several weeks for Craters and Freighters to pick it up and get it to me.
I also want to give a huge thank you to Jimmy for introducing me to Graham (Sharples) who found the exact dryer we had (in white) a few months ago. Graham, thank you for selling me the dryer, as it makes an almost perfect matched set.
The dryer arrived first. The heating coils were broken, as the insulator hold-downs had rusted away at several points. I located the parts (still available btw from GE) and with Jimmy's instructions, was able to successfully re-do the heating elements. I also re-set the dryer timer to the display control so it is now in sync and indicates the amount of run time correctly.
The dryer does work on the timed cycle but the automatic cycle has some issues to be sorted out. There are some wiring or thermostat issues I will work on soon.
The washer cosmetically is like brand new. It is amazing and is the oldest and nicest looker in my small collection.
The washer probably saw little use. It was in the kitchen of an apartment in Queens NY. The seller was handling the moving of her mother to an assisted living center. Her mother wanted the washer to go to a good home, so there must have been some sentimental attachment for her. Anyone here would have given this washer a good home, so I am very grateful that it turned out to be me.
The washer is quickly coming back to life. The pump housing leaked (original pump) so I replaced it. The small tub boot clamp (goes around the transmission) was loose (probably from the shipping to CA). This machine has the cleanest outer tub on a GE I have ever seen. It really looks brand new. After stopping the leaks, I connected it to the wash room water connections. The hot water valve is stuck open so a new water valve is on order. The final item is the slow/fast clutch solenoid. I have one on order, as it is not functioning, so it always shifts to fast speed.
The washer and dryer are now mated next to each other. For reference, the washer came with the original owner's manuals. The model number is WA1054W. A suds saver would have been WA1059W.
Again, thanks Robert, Jimmy and Graham! My Mother saw the set and thought it was very cool that the past was recreated. She even remebered that her original set was turquoise. My collection really is complete now and I thank AW.ORG for that!
