The only two times the GE repairman came to fix the V-12 were when a sock somehow breached the washbasket and ended up in the drain hole. When we sold the house in 1978, sixteen years later, they were both still working.

I'm glad this V-12 turned up again as this was the model Nancy Smith had delivered long about 1962?? I always remembered the double high panel where the buttons were it was so neat for a GE. I never saw the mini basket and for some reason I remember two rows of buttons in that panel but that has to be a faulty memory.

We had the same problems with our 1956 GE, sock in the pump syndrome. Funny how a single design was prone to the same problem.
But your machine as holes in the tub doesn't it, or is it solid???

Hi Mike, I put the GE service manual for the dryer in the mail to you today. So thrilled you got these. You have the best vintage washer collection in S. Calif. Must feel great to have all your washer and dryers actually working and all hooked up. Did you put your modern set in storage?

I have always thought the bleach dispenser on this washer was very clever. It would swallow a whole bottle of bleach and hold it, then dispense a measured amount of it when you selected the funcion.

Hi Jimmy,

Cannot wait to get the manual! I hope to work on it this weekend. Of course, the parts hunting is part of the fun also. The water valve for the washer should be here this week and I have the new speed shifter already. Hopefully those will get the washer back to normal.

The dryer I have a feeling will take some time. If it needs a new thermostat, yikes, talk about obsolete. We will see.

Thanks again, and yes, the newer GE's are stored for a while. I hope to build a small "two set" laundry room in the house next spring and they will go back into service then.

GE Dryer Service Manual

Hi Jimmy (AKA Filter Flo),

The dryer service manual arrived today! Thanks. It has the procedures for checking the thermostat operation so I am all set.

I will let you know what I find over the weekend. Thanks for thinking of me. Without your assistance, these would just be collecting dust in a storage unit.

Glad you got the manual safe and sound and so happy for you with your new GE set. Thank goodness the outer tub is in good shape with none of the usual holes typical of those machines. But then you are the GE outer tub expert now, having repaired several ! ! Isnt it a great feeling to have saved those by just a few simple repairs?

Dryer working like NEW

Hi Jimmy,

Thank you for the book! It details the operation of the compensated control. It is unlike later models in operation. Rather than heating and monitoring the tempterature with a thermostat until a set temp is reached where the timer then starts, it does this: Depending on the timer position (delicate, regular or heavy), the timer is activated until the heating coils turn on. When they are ON, the timer stops. This cycle repeats and due to the increase in drum temperature, the cycling takes more time the longer the dryer runs. Therefore, setting the timer to Heavy results in more cycle repeats so the overall drying time is increased. Very interesting!

I did find one wire that was touching a neighbor wire on the terminal strip so corrected that. Once that was done, everything started to work as designed. The compensated control may have been replaced, as there is no adjustment screw on the unit as expected. I am very happy to confirm proper operation!

Once my water valve arrives for the washer, they will be in perfect working order.
