I got the tip to the kelvinator fridge through thread 3127. I just picked the fridge up yesterday and it's in my kitchen right now. But it was false advertising. This thing has been sitting in a shack, being devoured by the elements for two years. I'm sick over the condition its in. I have the about '55 GE fridge that came with the house, but it doesn't have a defroster and I wanted something that would do the defrosting.

The house I moved into is a '57 ranch and it was never updated. It's just like the day it was built, so I furnished it with period pieces. Perhaps I show more of the house and furnishings some day, but I think I'm in the wrong forum for that.

Feel your pain, and sadly buying vintage appliances sight unseen can be a mine field.

If possible prefer to pay upon pick up if the item is local so can hash out any problems before paying. Have had my share of run-ins however with items that arrived no where near the condition they were promised. In each case told the seller they could arrange return shipping and refund my money, or was going to contact my credit card company. Most gave a partial refund, one person tried every lie, scam, con in the book to get himself out of it. In the end we spoke to MasterCard who contacted PayPal and a chargeback was arranged. Told the seller he was more than welcome to pick up the item or send funds for return shipping, he never bothered. Really hated to do that, but a few dings or scratches is one thing, this unit was so badly damaged that it did not work.

Welcome again to the club, and don't worry too much about this particular auction. Great thing about vintage appliance collecting is that every transaction is a learning process. Next time you'll know what to look for.

Thanks Launderess

I've had bad experiences on eBay before. Plenty. But this was the topper. I already contacted the woman who purchased the matching stove and warned her off completing the transaction. I just opened up the door and took a picture of what kind of hell I have in front of me, and as God as my witness, I had to kill a cricket crawling around in the egg tray.

Must think good thoughts now

I looked at your profile laundress. We're going to have to compare our coffee pot and coffee maker collections some day. I only have one vintage coffee maker, but many really cool coffee pots. Again, thanks for the kind words of comfort after this traumatic event. I'll include a picture of a more happy appliance. It's my GE Built-in. I have the original manual too. Works like a charm.

Versatronic, more pictures of the kitchen & appliances and post pics of your house in the Super Forume. I know we'd all love to see it!!

AND WELCOME!!

Well, OK, I might be able to do that

House photos go in Super Forum. I got it. My place is a mess at the moment due to that damned refrigerator debacle. I borrowed the camera to document the poor condition of the fridge. But I will take picture at some point and post in the Super forum. Thanks for your interest.

First the drying, then the ironing

appnut, maybe this is appropriate for this forum. No modern laundry room is complete without a built-in ironing board. Notice the green door on the wall.

Here's the money shot

Now here's the obigatory and gratuitous automaticwashers.org "pop-that-baby-open" shot. There's another ironing board for sleeves that comes down as well. And this ironing board even rotates left and right. When I said this place hadn't been updated since the fifties, I wasn't kidding.

OMG!

What conditon did the seller describe that fridge! Sorry if this sounds "mean" but wouldn't let anything in that conditon past my front door. Yes, can imagine you found crickets inside, and god only knows what else. You poor laddie! Oh well what does not kill us makes us stronger!

Please let us continue this conversation in the "Super" forum about coffee pots and the like, since it is where it belongs.

Welcome, yet again.

L.

Yeah, I know

I normally wouldn't let ANYTHING in my house that looked like that. But I had already moved the previous fridge down two flights of stairs to the basement. There was no way I was bringing it back up. Like I said, this has all been terribly traumatic. You guys are really cheering me up though.

Hey Mike if you ever get down around Arlington again......

Look me up and I will be glad to show you some of my local haunts that are good for picking up vintage small appliances here in Northern Va. On a more ironic note my sister and brother in law live in Harrisburg....my sister works for Hershey and is the associate brand manager for Jolly Ranchers. She and her husband built a house in the new Sagewick subdivision out past Grumbines RV's 3 years ago. Next time I get up there I would love to meet you and chat with you as you are living in what I consider to be my dream house....A 1950's house with all the vintage trimings!!!!!!! It is people like you that help people like me keep our dreams alive.

P.S if I were you I'd bring back up the '55 GE fridge as it doesn't use as much current as the '65 Kelvinator....because there is none of that self defrosting BS to deal with

65 Kelvinator

It's not as bad as it looks, nothing a lot of 409/Fantastick can't fix

"because there is none of that self defrosting BS to deal with"

As much as I like vintage refrigerators, I well remember the PITA of defrosting, so no fridge for me before the No Frost era. Plus, the Kelvinator's freezer wil be a TRUE 0 degree freezer, good for long time storage, unlike single door refrigerators with freezer compartments

I do like the simplicity and the sounds of a manual defroster.

Less freezer burn without a fan in the freezer (deep-freeze=> Australia). Less temperature fluctuation and the ice cubes dont melt together as quickly.

And a regular hair dryer works great to assist defrost.

Fridge

Moving refrigerators is about the worst experience you can have. A refrigerator will only fit through my front door. It wont fit into my kitchen from the back door. My front door has some steep concrete steps in front of it. I almost died getting this machine from hell up the stairs and into my place. The day before, I moved a GE out the front door and down TWO flights of stairs to get it to my garage. I have some great friends, but if I keep asking them to swap refrigerators in and out of my house, I'll end up friendless, so I have to really decide what I want to do here.

This beast from hell leaked all over my floor last night and buckled one of my floor tiles. I need an exorcist more than I need 409, I think.
