Thanks for the great videos Robert. My Hotpoint is the same model as yours. I dont use it much because of the excess water it uses! Love the machine, just hate the way that Hotpoint programmed that timer. My washer works fine, nice and quiet and smooth and I love the wash action it has. Mine does not seem to have an off balance switch. Does yours Robert? I think it was soon after these models that Hotpoint started using one.......maybe when they changed it to the Co-Axial tranny?

This is real awsome. First the wonderdial works completly differently than what I thought. The 55 Hotpoint we had was a basic model with a plain green dial. I remember my mother always starting the washer at the same spot. And I still thought it was a wonder dial. Well maybe I was wrong. What was so simular is the way the water entered the tub flowing down. My mother used to add the clothes than start the washer and while it was filling she would add the soap. And she would actually turn the tub so everything got wet and soapy.
The Adjation was simular but sounded a bit different. We had the black gooseneck. Ours also went right into spin without pausing. Ours didnt do as much overflowing as this machine. This brings back so many memories.

One question was this a timed fill machine? I think ours was timed fill but always filled up even when pressure was lower.

Well I can't get the videos to download properly at home with my sorry dial-up service so I will have to wait till Monday morning when I get to the office to watch them. I can't wait to see the machine my mom had when I was born in operation again. I'm lookign forward to the demo of the wonder dial as well.

Oh yes, I was way impressed by the turnover, too. The stills didn't do it justice. I'm really surprised, because--man--if I take the fins off my "faux 1-18," the turnover is nonexistent. The nub-o-lation must do the trick :-D

I love the way it doesn't skip a beat before going from agitation to spin.

BTW, I thought the Samantha bit was GREAT! You did a really good job of it.

You should consider doing more special effects in the future, like maybe pulling mostly dry clothes out of a Kenmore :-)

Auntie's Hotpoint

My aunt had one like this and it used to churn up tons of suds. She didn't have the greatest water pressure, from the well. I remember her setting it for the longest fill. It would fill just right on the wash, but always started the rinse before it was full. I think the object for the static rinse was to let slow water catch up. The pump was much quieter when it was chiked with Tide the lid was shut and the hose shoved down the drain pipe. OMG In its last days, when it started to agitate it would clunk so loudly it scared guests in the living room. She replaced it was a Whirlpool Supreme in 1961.

Very interesting and so kool-Love the comparisons of the overflow rinses at the end of the program.Yes'love that SQ overflow rinse-saw it in the laundramat machines in an apartment building I lived in in 1973.Loved how the tall upper blades of the agitator forced the lint out as was shown in the video clip.The turnover of that Hotpoint seems very effective compared to the hi-speed short stroke "roto tillers" -"clothes shredders" of today.Any possiblity of this one featured on a DVD?

Greg I can’t agree more, it’s a terrible cycle, they should have let the machine spin for at least two increments on the first spin (3 minutes).

Jimmy, yes it does have an unbalance switch, its simply a wire that goes from the pump up to the timer, to push the timer dial in if the load gets unbalanced. They moved to the Coaxial design for the 1958 line.

Mike, the sounds you hear are the motor, pump and you can sort of hear the clutch in the final spin.

Ausin this wasn’t a full load, only ¾ full that way we would get some turnover on the video, and no Big Red doesn’t quite fit in this machine, its too short.

Rex, possibly someday I’ll make this into a full DVD, the red agitator sure is fun.
 
Thanks Robert, very nice videos! And you're very good at demonstrating washers! I remember a demonstation lady coming over to our house to show my mother how to use her first automatic washer. I'm sure you would have done a better job than her!

Some aspects of this machine are indeed a little disappointing, like the overflow and the short first spin. I love the sounds it makes though. Perhaps I missed it in the other thread, but does this machine have a lint filter?

I can only say thank you for the wonderful way you started my Saturday.
These are great - Hotpoint was always sort of a 2nd best in my mind. Now I see what it must once have been - quality at a reasonable price point.
We can't vote for you at the Oscar's...but I vote we change your name to 'Sam' for obvious reasons!
 
Louis, this 56 had no lint filter. Hotpoint didn't add that feature till after the introduction of the coaxial models. Thw filter was Hotpoint's version of the Norge burpulator system.

Louis, no filter on this machine. Like Les said Hotpoint's first lint filter was a reciculation system on the 1958 - early 60's TOL models and a underwater agitator cartridge filter for the MOL & BOL machines. Then when the Spiralator came out in the mid 60s they started using a Birpalator style filter.
