the aqualtis has had its days

well, where to start?
the aqualtis (as some members know) has been playing up for the last few months, the LED displays sometimes only display half of the wash information and it doesnt seem to was well anymore. we were going to replace it when the kitchen was done but we cannot stand using the aqualtis anymore as washing doesnt wash well (i rekon the element is going in it). tomorrow we are trecking down to John Lewis to order a miele W5780WPS, it has many positive reviews but i am dreading plumbing it in as i have heared that they are very heavy lol
i will let you all know how it goes

great choice! I had intended buying an Aqualtis from John Lewis as I thought Hubby would never go for spending extra and getting a Miele. He totally suprised me when we were in John Lewis saying we should spend extra and get something that was going to last. After reading about some troubles people have had with the Aqualtis I am glad I chose my Miele. I know some people aren't fans of Miele, that's fine, some die hard Miele fans dislike the W1000 range but I love mine. Looking back I do wish I'd have spent a bit more and got a machine with the commercial silent motor as the spin can be a bit noisy ( not excessive though ) on my machine, although I do think if we didn't have wooden floors the machine would appear to be quieter on spin. We also have open plan so sound does tend to bounce around! I did get a great deal in John Lewis though, my machine was £649, a steal for a machine that will last. You will be amazed at how much you can fit in your new machine and still get great results! It did take me a while to try all the programs and determine which suited different loads the best. You will also love how quick ( compared to the Aqualtis ) the wash times are without sacrificing wash performance. Anyway....I am waffling now....congrats again Tom and look forward to hearing your opinions.

im really looking forward to it as the aqualtis (which is sort of like an old friend cos my mum bought it when i was still in primary school circa 2006 lol) was rusting and it was a right eyesaw and also it was soo noisy!!

With the Miele. That's probably the most sensible machine to buy in the Miele range; under £1000 but with 10 year warranty, so basically less than £100 per year of guaranteed use.

The cheaper ones with 2 year warranty seem like a waste of time to me. If they break after 5 years (which according to UK White Goods forums, they can do) then because Miele restrict repair info more than most, you're faced with an expensive official repair, causing some people to scrap the machine. If i was gonna scrap a machine after only a few years i'd rather it be a cheaply made £200-£400 thing than an over £650 Miele. I think with 2 year warranties on cheaper LG, Bosch, Gorenje machines and 5 years on AEG, Siemens & pricier Gorenje machines, Miele's with 2 year warranty look very stingy, and with their restrictive repair info it doesn't make sence to me to buy one unless it's got more than 5 years cover included in the price.

That said, the W5780 is a good choice. A friend's parents have one & they seem very pleased, though the program times for Cottons are long if you don't press the Short button. Your Aqualtis has lasted pretty well. Some of them don't seem to last very long given the prices either.

Anyway i'll shut my ranting - just don't like how authorities bang on about 'Acting on CO2' when we're chucking washers into landfill after only a few years use! Very wasteful World we've turned into.

I almost always use the "short" option on all washes. Cottons short, depending on load size can be between 59mins and 125mins on a 60deg wash and removes stubborn stains from tea towels with no problem. I have only used a long wash on exceptionally dirty stuff, even then the program usually runs at less than 2hrs. I agree that a Miele with a 2yr warranty is a bit of a joke for the price, especially when you can get an AEG made John Lewis machine much cheaper with the same warranty.

Sounds like your program times are abit shorter than my mates one. Is yours a 6kg? His is 7kg (the same machine Tom is planning to get, i think) and that gets close to or over 3 hours on Cottons, which seems excessive to me, even for 7kg. 2 hours or less for Cottons is acceptable though. Our Zanussi does Cottons 60 in 1 hour 45 mins or an hour & 15 mins with Super Quick selected. I think ours is the exception for a modern machine though.

Don't get me wrong i still think Miele are decent machines, our Miele dishwasher is 9 years old & perfect, but if they're 'tested for 20 years use' or whatever they tell us, then why the lack of confidence to offer more than 2 year warranty? That's basically my point - they probably will outlast an AEG/John Lewis/Gorenje but at least AEG/John Lewis/Gorenje have the confidence to guarantee their products until they're at an age when you wouldn't feel disappointed if they packed-up, given the purchase price. Miele should easily be able to offer minimum 5 years - without it costing them anything if their quality claims are true.

Hi Liam,

Yea, mine is a 6kg machine. I would love to have a look at the Miele 7kg drum, but J/L in Edinburgh never have the machines plugged in so you can't open the door. The drum on mine still seems cavernous compared to our old Hotpoint WD440 and am always suprised how much laundry I can actually comfortably fit in.

I wholeheartedly agree that Miele should offer a minimum of 5yrs parts and labour.

Not on the lower priced machines

Only 2 years on many washing machines, dryers & dishwashers. Seen a few washers with 5 or (like the one you're looking at) 10 years cover, but pretty much all the other appliances of theirs i've seen only have 2 years. Considering you can't get a washer of theirs for under £600, that's pretty lame.

You shouldn't have any worries on the machine you mentioned tho. This seems to have 10 years cover.

Paul, i think when Miele add a bigger load capacity, the drum is genuinly bigger, whereas a few makes seem to keep the drum size the same and just increase the wash time, as if to say 'cram it in, it'll all wash coz it's tumbling for 4 hours'. I definately like this aspect of Miele machines as i never cram the drum totally full so want a genuine 6 or 7 kg with room to spare.

All Miele's come with 2 year Parts & Labour ... However.

All their current models are included in a promotional 5 year or 10 year parts & labour - yes every single one.
Plus those with 5 years parts & labour can be extended to 10 years for just £149 - bear in mind it would probably cost that much per year, after the 5 years is up, if you do then later decide to go extend.
The W5780, does not have a 10 year guarantee - its only 5 years - see the link.

In terms of commercial motor only the W5000 8KG machines have this. The 7KG machines, and all the others feature motor's with carbon brushes. Models with Commercial Motor - according to Miele website: W5000 (Supertronic) & W5964 (Steam).

i also helped sell a miele Prestige 6 (i think) to a customer lol managment gave me a voucher for free coffee lol

the customer was looking at a siemens too but she had a bosch before snd she said that it was nothing but trouble. she knew that siemens was part of bosch, she liked the siemens and the miele but she liked the siemens more, untill i showed her the soap drawer, it was weak and flimsy. she chose the miele over it then lol, she was really intereasted in the miele machines but the depth of some of them was an issue to her because her kitchen door is next to the washer, the prestige 6 (or somthing) was 61CM and it was adequite for her needs, she loved it and she bought it
blew me a kiss too afterwards lol
i think John Lewis is my future place of employment

Great choice of machine. I have the Prestige Plus and can't fault it. I recently managed to upgrade my warranty from 5 years to 10 years under the current offer - thanks Miele . Can't wait to see some snaps of it in it's new home.
