Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

White actually began with sewing machines in the 1800's, then moved on to cars and trucks. After some difficulties during and after the Depression and WWI, White Motors merged with Consolidated trucks to become White Consolidated, dropping cars totally in favour of truck production.

IIRC WCI is the parent company of White Sewing, White Motors, etc; and simply went on a buying spree picking up other companies over the years.

Just as aside General Motors was an automobile company (amoung other things) that sold off it's appliance division to WCI.

Ah ok I see now, thanks for the info. I've seen an older style Frigidaire washer run. Aside from the quality problems, that washer is quieter than direct drive Whirlpools.

One has to remember after WWII many American companies turned to making appliances to make use of all the surplus to requirement factories/space previously used for the war effort. Also with the returning GIs (and their money in the form of the GI bill), housing shortages, building up of the surburbs/new housing, baby boom, and all the other factors of the post war American economic boom, there was a huge appliance market. So many had done without during the war, everyone was now looking forward to making up for lost time.

General Motors had it's hand in many pies, including making locomotives and RR coaches.
