I have finally finished the tub change on my Rapidry 1000. It's been out of service for about two months. First of all I want to say thank you to all who have provided me assistance with this. Bob Orear, who has transported several machines for me and who brought up the donor machine from SC. Philippe, who donated the donor machine. Mark Harman, for early advice on how to handle the project. Steve Riley, your advice has helped me learn and kept me from foolish mistakes. Hans Craig, for donating other machines that will be shown in this thread. Robert Seger, for providing this website full of knowledge, without this site none of the machines I have would have been possible. Finally, my Dad who worked a great magic on rusty parts yeserday. We found a small tear in the water bellows that was on the machine and this contributed to a great amount of rust to be battled. Eventually all those rusty parts became putty in his hands. I feel a great sense of satisfaction in the completion of this project and I'm very happy. It was worth the labor, but I don't want to wrestle with putting on one of those damn water bellows anytime soon.

To recap the project, the original problem was a terrible vibration in Rapidry and very poor balancing. The culprit, a leaky tub plug on the original tub had allowed the cast iron granules to clump together. Here is a picture of the bad old, nasty tub ;)

I notice that my 1-18 slows down significantly during the spray rinse, after the wash cycle. I'm thinking it could have to do with the rollers, but I'm not sure. How does your poppy 1-18 in the background respond to similar situations? Any knowledge of where to tighten the rollers to assist would be helpful, of course. Nice machines, by the way.

Beautiful machines Joe. Glad you got the tub swap done and I'm sure it wasn't easy. I love the new turquoise machine too. The color and control panel are one of my favorites. You're building a very fine Frigidaire collection. Ahem, now about that Whirlpool....!

I think the Whirlpool is a washer. The timer on the washers are on the right side and the timers on the dryers are on the left.(when you are facing the machine).

Norfolk, from my experience with 1/18s, even when new, the slowing down during spray rinse was pretty normal, especially if you had used a high-sudsing detergent.

Now, as for the filtrator, dare ain't nuttin quite like a load of towels being put in a filtrator after being washed in a Frigidaire washer with a 1010+ rpm spin.

Very nice machines. I've not seen a 1-18 with that interesting emblem on the front. Must have been a limited edition. ;-)

The turquoise is a '65, the other a '68, correct?

Sweet Joe, I'm glad you were able to work through this project. Congrats on having this one up and running!

BTW - very nice turquoise Rollermatic. Was the DV-65 the Filtrator that Hans found recently?

Re:

NorfolkSouthern: Mine slows down just a tiny bit during spin spray, but it's barely noticable, if it's significant on yours, I'd clean the rollers first off and check the belt tension (1" deflection) If there is a way to tighten them someone who knows more than I do will have to chime in one that. I've never worked on the 1-18. Matter of fact, from the looks of mine I don't think it's ever been worked on except the timer motor.

Now about that emblem on the 1-18. I wondered if that would get any remarks. There's nothing original or "limited edtion" about it. I bought that off ebay, one day I held it up to the 1-18 and it looked so nice there that I just decided to put it on. I don't even know what it came off of, but it appears to be something from the 50's. I felt that it may be inappropriate, but it is my machine and I decided that I was blending "vintage" with "really vintage".

Now to end the wonders about the Whirlpool. That is a DD, dual action, WhirlShred. It's not worth a damn compared to the Frigidaire's. I use it to wash underclothes and dog towels in. Pretty soon, it's coming out and another little goodie is going in it's place, but more on that later...

The Filtrator, yep it's the one Hans found. It's in pretty good shape too, just a little cleaning, dust removal, and a new cord, after that we'll see if she runs.
