I haven't tried it yet, but it smells fabulous. Here's the recipe I used...
1 1/4 cup sugar
3 1/2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
5 ounces evaporated milk
2 eggs
1 pie crust uncooked
Heat oven to 325. Mix sugar, cocoa and butter in a large bowl. Add eggs and beat for 3 minutes. Add milk and vanilla. Beat until combined. Press pie crust into pie plate and prick the bottom of crust with a fork. Pour in filling and bake for 50 minutes. Let cool before serving.
There is another variation of this recipe that calls for 1 1/2 cups sugar, 3 tablespoons of cocoa and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Everything else is the same. Enjoy!
Made one tonight, very good, I ate half the pie! Mine came out a little different looking than the one pictured, the top crust is a lighter brown and a bit crusty while the inside is very moist and tender. I'll make it again...
Please pardon me showing my ignorance, but the tale of Miss Minnie's Pie is not common knowledge on this side of the pond.... Which book/film should I look for?? It certainly looks delicious... Who NEEDS a 'secret ingredient'??
I made this pie Saturday night for a cookout we had yesterday. It was WONDERFUL! Everyone loved it and "had" to have the recipe. When I took my first bite of this pie I was reminded of the wonderful chocolate chess pie my Aunt Dora Lee made. Aunt Dora Lee was my Mama's oldest sister and my "serrogate" grandmother (as I never knew my grandparents). Aunt Dora Lee was known by our family and her church family for her chocolate and egg custard pies! Mama said it was her Okeefe and Merit (sp?) gas range that made the difference. Aunt Dora Lee passed away in September 1973. I miss her still. Thank you for sharing this recipe and helping me remember my favorite aunt! Jim
Hi Jim. You are very welcome! I'm glad I was able to help you take a trip down memory lane and I'm glad you and everyone else liked the pie. I made it for my bff and her kids this weekend and they loved it as well. I just like that it's so simple and the outcome is just wonderful.
