THANKS all for the kind wishes!!
Our daily living situation hasn't changed with this purchase. I have lived here most of my life. Right now the house is a bit in shambles but as we do work to restore/improve then we will post pictures. As you can imagine it will be a while before I am feeling up to any major projects. The kitchen does have most of it's orig appliances such as the Toastmaster warming drawers, Chambers wall oven, Sub Zero fridge, Hotray ceramic/glass heating counter-top as well as a Majestic "real" charcoal bar-b-q. I'm sorry but I can't get pics now as the kitchen has become a clutter central (we aren't using this kitchen currently) from cleaning out my grandfathers quarters.
My grandparents and uncle(grandmothers single brother who lived with them) had construction started in 1960 then fired the contractor due to "artistic differences" then decided to take on the construction themselves. This was quite an undertaking since they were running a business at the same time. They would come home then work late into the night. Every stone was dug and laid by my grandparents and uncle as well as most of the wood mouldings were milled by them. Many of the drapes were hand stitched by my grandmother. Some are still hanging!
This house was their pride and joy. The one universal wish that they all shared was to be able to die in this house which I can happily say was able to happen. The house has always been a great source of pride and inspiration to me as I look back on the years with my three best friends (grandma, grandpa and unc) and how they let nothing get in the way of building a dream. I feel them in this house every day and their voices in the back of my mind are a great comfort to me when I'm feeling down. Sometimes I sit in the library and look at the Walnut parquet floor, that took them 1 year to hand cut and lay(no nails...pressure fit)and think to myself that with patience and hard work anything is possible.
I hope to meet many of you and extend our hospitality in our home where love and family always came first!!
We will post pics as we get them. I might be able to find some older pictures to post!
Sudsmaster: "Same assymetrical gable roof - one story in front, two in back" sounds exactly like ours! From the fromt it looks small but we have more than 15 rooms. OYE...thank goodness I collect vacuum cleaners as well. I need them
