What would like to know why do you hear water sloshing around after the spincycle?

And why so short tumbles! They could use some long tumbles to really tumble clohting, all though it seems to be a good washer! Maybe instead of those futuristic washer, the neptune seems to be much better!

The machine that killed Maytag?

Nice to see one restored, but as a former (failed) Neptune owner seeing the pics of before vs. after hardware I kept asking myself "why didn't they design it this way in the first place?" All those better designed and heavier-duty parts made me wonder why they designed it so cheaply the first time around and ended up with so many problems? Inadequate product testing or just irresponsible cost-cutting??

Disclaimer: I'm still irked that I found out about the lawsuit settlement three months AFTER the closing period and was never officially notified in spite of having a victim machine that was fully registered. That plus the fact that I had a multiple-component failure (motor and bearings I think) in the washer the very week we started potty-training #1 (yuk !!) AND the dryer completely shorted out the same week made me swear to never buy another Maytag *anything* again.

But I'm not bitter... :-O

When it did work, it really did work well and was pretty quiet. But mine at least was, in the end, a lemon. Very sad to see a great company go down in flames after something like this product.

very cool

That's a great job you did Ben. I'm rather impressed with the wash action I saw in your vid. I love my Neptune but I have 2 small complaints about it. First, if I choose an extra rinse, the fabric softener is dispensed in rinse 3 and then flushed out in the extra rinse 4. The other thing is that it only spins after the wash and does not spin at all between the rinses, only does distribution tumbles. But the final 800 spin is very effective.

If I remember correctly about the Neptune commercial.
Wasn't there a shot of the washer and dryer at night in a field and a space ship came down?
I think the washer repair guy had oil on his clothes and the aliens zapped his clothes into the washer?
I don't think it was Gordon Jump that got zapped, but he was at the end saying something about being lonely.

Askomiele, You can hear liquid sloshing around after the spin because the spin tub has a liquid filled balance ring mounted around the opening. If you spin the tub by hand, you'll hear it moving around in the ring.

The duration of the wash tumble and pauses between reversal of tumble directions is different depending on which cycle you have it set on. For normal wash it is around 50% wash and 50% pause. On handwash, it's more like 30% wash and 70% pause.

As far as having a window in the door, I've been playing around with that. The problem is on the older units, there is a vibration counterweight mounted inside the door liner. The newer 5500's don't have that, I believe. I'm 'modifying' an extra door to try the window idea... We'll see...

Again, congrats to Ben the Neptune man...

The only thing I didn't like about the Neptune is no window in the door so you could watch it wash. I used a Neptune at the the laundromat before I got my Frigidaire front loader, and was quite impressed with it.

Great restore job too!

Is there not a Maytag Dryer that has a window? Iam sure one of the USA guys has one in their collection........that door on your machine = hours of wash-day fun!!!!

Wow, I'm jelous of you Ben. I almost grabed the Neptune that was dumped off at the store when the customer got a new one, and open the door, OMG, MOLD!

Seeing you done this one, I'll have to keep an eye out next time around, and then it can match with my Neptune Dryer I have.

While you're looking for one of your own...

If you can find a MAH4000AWW with a serial number that starts with 53 or higher (series 53), it should come with the vented door, boot with drain and upgraded machine control already factory installed. Ealier models had to have the PHA upgrade to get that.

Real Neptunes w/ windows

I've thought about this subject a bit since getting the machine. A window would of course be fun, etc. I don't imagine though that for every load I put in the washer that I would demand a front row seat to see what is going on. My intent with this washer is to use it as an everyday machine, and the vintage machines will always be there to fill the void of seeing dramatic wash action. And - with this washer you can open the door for the first 3 minutes anyway to see the wash action before it locks the door, and if you want to watch a spin you can defeat the lock if you heart desires.

BUT - Andrew if you do come up with a fun solution, keep us posted! :P

Looks like you had some work like I had to do to my Maytag N

Last summer I changed tubs in my Neptune using a good tub out of a washer with bad control. These washers I obtained look to be not in bad shape as far as corosion, just that the seal leaked on the main washer causing the washer bearings to sound like driving down a stone road at 90 MPH

Great job, Ben, and thanks for all the photos of the process. A friend lives in an apt. building which sports an all-Neptune laundry room, so I have been able to get a little first-hand experience with them. Only thing I don't like is the lack of a window.

Fond memories

I remember my days of servicing the neptunes. The machine should now last you awhile. You have done all the "upgrades" to the machine. The machine you have is one of the earlier versions of the 3000. It still had the motor with the "tach" in it but had the newer "log" water valve. IIRC your machine should be somewhere between series 19 and 25?

Awesome Job!!!

Would love to do the upgrades to my Neptune, but I am a little scared as my experience is exceeding limited and I need to depend on it for a while longer...

It blew two mother boards so I would assume that update has been done and on the second board they realized it was the wax motor so that has been done...By the way - Maytag covered the entire repair + labor and it was outside of waranty. I was impressed...
