The most appalling thing I have seen on eBay in a long time...

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

OOUUCH--That looks very painful!!Guess that was OK in '53-don't think it would be now!!WOW another thought-may be just as vulgar-another way to get breast milk?Who is going to fill out her "accident report" for OSHA?Woman caught in unguarded wringer-and the wringer's emergency-release stop bar doesn't work.

Hey, Jason!!

It was not my aunt. It was my grandmother. She actually got her breasts caught in a wringer washer while she was doing laundry with my aunt. OUCH!!! No kidding. This is a true story. (It is not meant to be vulgar.)

You are so right Patrick! It was not so fabulous for many people.

Very rude and impolite because it makes some people feel bad and others embarrassed and I think people who collect that type of thing (and I doubt if this is within the range of Black collectibles) should be sensitive to the people who are the subject and maybe keep their buying and selling of such stuff confined to their clubs, societies, or KKK chapters; but then that is asking the impossible. Nobody has any choice about how they are born into this world regarding wealth, station, appearance, skin color, ethnic background, health, gifts or impairments or sexual orientation. And the only things we can learn from this is to love ourselves and our fellow beings and creatures as creations of the Creator, thank the Creator for what we have been given and be compassionate to those with less because we do not know the reasons for why things are the way that they are... yet.

I agree with Rick and Patrick; When people speak longingly about the 'simpler times' like the 1950's and early 60's, I say "Oh, you mean when black people couldn't sit in the restaurant of their choice and men could rape their wives? Yeah, those were the days."

When I was in kindergarten, a kid used to come to school with big bruises and welts. It was obvious he was being beaten at home. He would tell the teacher his Dad had punished him and the teacher would say, "Well, you must be a very bad little boy." That kid was me.

You can say whatever you want about the state of school systems today and society in general, but we have made progress in some very important areas.

It would be an entirely different thing if it was a black housemaid in an appliance ad (i.e. Mechanical Mandy), but do we really have to post stuff like this?

Also, some of you may consider this to be REMOTELY appliance-related, but not only is it completely inappropriate, it is degrading. Why not just learn to respect everyone?

i think the post served its purpose of constructive discussion. i dont think anyone here wishes to promote the item on ebay. i dont. many of the threads here allow us to share our thoughts and experiences. i hope nobody thought i was trying to be amusing. David

Although many of you probably think of me as being rather intolerant, I found this little piece rather amusing. Lighten up guys, it's just a piece of ceramic. Obviously, it didn't offend someone when it was made, because it was created and sold in a store...why are we so sensitive now?

It's not that it did not offend some when it was made, but that it did offend some then who had nobody to be their advocate, when a large part of the population did not feel that they deserved equal rights because they were considered to be inferior or sub-human. The fact that people care more now shows that there has been some progress, in some places at least, in appreciating the thought that more people deserve to be treated as we each feel that we should be treated, even if it came about largely through very unpopular legislation. I am very glad that you have never known discrimination and don't know the pain it causes. The other side of that coin is that it seems to be one of the very few things that can teach us that others can hurt just like we do when treated badly. The unfortunate thing about the history of human beings is that the major lesson learned by most from being the victim of discrimination is how to make others hurt when the formerly oppressed rise to a position in which they can discriminate against others.

LIGHTEN UP!!!!

Guys, this is a social artifact from a diffrent era! AND yes I think it is funny, but we have to find out why were laughing, not because shes black , but because of the expression on her face. I would laugh if it was a white woman instead.

Here in england we have seaside post cards, with this kind of thing on, normally with middle aged housewives. Its pure smut, also pure englishnesses!!!!

Im a gay man, and do i laugh at gay jokes?? YES!! because there funny. When my friends at work tell gay jokes im not offended, they are funny jokes!!!

Sorry but im reading down the negative things said here and I cannot help but feel a lot of it has been said by white people speaking on black peoples behalf.

Personally I HATE people being poltically correct becasue they think its the right thing to do, here in england normally only white people screaming from the rooftops that christmas offends muslims, and we should change the name of christrams tree lights to festive lights etc.

Do I find this character funny, yes very much so - Do I hate black people, want to beat them up and send them back to Africa?????? NO! I dated a beautiful black man for a while at university.

Hmmmm

Im just sat on my bed thinking now about that little ceramic, and would I feel comfortable owning it and having it on display when a black friend comes round - and I think i would.

So maybe there is something wrong with me?

If I find it funny but would be embarassed with my friend saw it?

Hmm im gonna have to think a bit more about this

There is a black woman in the Bay Area who collects artifacts such as the one in this thread. She's been interviewed on TV, along with shots of some of her collection. When asked why she collects it, she's very philosophical, to the effect that by collecting and owning it, she has some power over it, and it also is instructive of a different time in our history. And she thinks some of it is not offensive, and some of it even amusing, but I think she'd regard this piece as offensive.

Would I want to have it in my home? No. I find it offensive. But I don't object to this thread - after all, Brett clearly said he thought it was extremely offensive in his opening post - so everyone was fore-warned. Do I think it should be destroyed? No, but I think it needs to be part of a larger collection to give it some perspective.
