The Puzzle of the 1946 Vornado 10D1 solved

I've had my Vornado for years, it finally needed a cleaning, painting , lubing job. But I had puzzled over that for years as I could not see how to take it apart, and all those "Fan People" just show you it in pieces and then working - not helpful! Its a pretty easy puzzle once you figure it out and a snap to put back together as well !  Here is the fan in the final condition, it never did have the grill that was gone before I got it. So Danger Will Robinson !

The trick

to taking apart this fan starts with loosening up the for bolts locking the spindle legs to the motor frame. Once you do that then you can push the main horizontal rods a 1/4 into the motor mount, you will see the holes disappear. Once you do that then turn the fan around so you are staring from the back, now in the right side you must pull the right support arm away and push the fan housing towards the left side. You will get just enough clearance to free the right support rod from the fan base because that rod has a slight taper to it. If you try from the left you will fail as that rod is square. Now its just a matter of careful disassembly

there was 8o years of dust and surface corrosion, I put the nuts and bolts in my Eastman jigglier for the day to clean them up and put a shine back on the surfaces. Lubed the motor no need to open it at this time. Painted the rusty parts, I found a very close match to the original color at ACE. I was going to re-paint the wind nacelles but to my amazement buffing with FLITZ brought back the original shine so much I cancelled that idea! See the transition!

Upon cleaning the fan blade I

discovered cracking , so that has to be stopped, so I injected JB WELD into the cracks and let that set up overnight.

Now she's fully assembled and

operating almost intact, I have some vibration on the low setting but I don't use low so no problem there. Im putting up a video over on FB.

I had some metal-to-metal vibration on one of ours where the support goes through the nacelle because the grommet had hardened and flaked away. I was actually able to find a replacement at Lowes in the "drawers of goodies" in the fastener area. I'm sure Ace would have them as well.

Nah. This particular one is a simpler design with a single nacelle from aprox the early '50's (B28C1-1, web pic). A couple of screws and done!

Looks good after the cleanup. I'll have to dig mine out that someone gave me a couple years back. I've never used it. Mine looks more like the one Chuck posted if I remember correctly. It's turquoise in color. Do you owners of them find they move more air than a regular fan does?

I find

way more air and very much quieter than other pedestrian fans

On low I get this rattling sound

very annoying found out it is worn fiber bushings in the motor, if I keep the unit tilted up ( which I do) its quiet even on low, sometime I will replace the fiber bushings but its not  a priority at the moment.
