These were some beautiful machines, this was the last year of the slanted tub machine that tangled so well and washed so poorly. LOL. The 1959-1963 slanted front washers are my all time favorite FL WHs. They not only went to a much improved washer design but they also got rid of the five friction snubbers that they used from the beginning through the 1958 models and used two automotive type shock absorbers instead. 

 

In 1964 they downsized the cabinets on the full sized machine, lost the distinctive slant and increased the size of the 25, 1/2" wide stack pair making them all 27" wide. Unfortunately they went back to the friction snubbers [ they used eight this time ] and continued to make this design into 1988 for a run of almost 30 years. Thats almost three times as long as the original clothes tangler.
 
this is the washer my "other mother" had when we moved across the street from them in 1961--had been neighbors behind us at the old house.  I was too small and too nearsighted to ever beable to read the wash guide.  As I remember, they bought this from a neighbor down the street about ayear after that neighbor had acquired the washer--they just dind't like it.  Anywqay, it was paired with what I called the sunburst frog-eye Kenmore dryer.  This washer lasted until the shaft broke off at the back of the drum. and was replaced witht eh MonkeyNorge that Fred found and is in Fred & Robert's basement.  Loved thiis washer, except when it went out of balance and didn't trip the off-balance switch to stop the machine and it started hopping around the laundry room, which then made me run in terror to the family room off the kitchen. I believe Mr. Jetcone has a set of these in his collection.

Thanks for those scans. We were a Westinghouse family, dad worked there. But I had no idea they got so stylish and had hydraulic dampers. Ours sure didn't. The next Westy we got was squarefront. Boring, and nowhere near reliable as predecessors. Mom hated it. After it broke for about the 5th time we got a Westy toploader, made by somebody else, roundabout 1966. The golden age of appliances was over, except for Maytag.
