Of Lionel train track of course! From what we can tell, this is Lionel train set is a 1926-27 vintage that was made specially for Macy's department store. My Grandfather bought it secondhand for my Uncle just before he left for World War II in 1942. He's 70 now, and wanted me to have it, so it would stay in the family. This train set has been a fixture of Christmas around my mother's side of the family since. Notice the joyous look of the boy on the cover of the box

The transformer, and some of the pullman cars. The pullmans have lights inside them! One of my favorites is that spotlight car

The locomotive: A rendition of an electric train locomotive of the time. It also has lights on the front and back. Those driver wheels are HUGE, about 2 inches in diameter

Some of the track, including switches. The switches even light up green or red depending on which direction they are switched. There's lots more track in the box. There's also Many of the other parts & accessories here too, including 4 street lamps, a water tower, a whistle controller, etc. Even the instructions are there! Some of these parts were not with the original kit, but were bought by my uncle later on.

What a treasure!!!! My great-uncle collected trains, and when he decided to give them up as he approached old age, he gave all of his grand-nephews a set. I don't remember much about mine, as my parents (and Santa Claus, of course!!!) gave me a new, modern HO gauge set in 1961. Shortly after receiving this new, modern set, my Mother gave the O guage set to other cousins who didn't value them at all. When we visited them sometime shortly afterwards, they were playing outside in the dirt with the engine and cars. I will never forget seeing that, because I didn't want to give them up when Mother gave them away. But she insisted, and had the last word...after all, they didn't "have much" she said.....as an adult, now I know why...they destroyed everything they got their hands on. I still have my HO set, and the only way they will leave this house is when my estate is settled.....Selfish? maybe, but I wish I had a lot of the other things I used to have....especially my pink SweetHeart toy wringer washer...

That is a beautiful Lionel set, Steve! It must have cost a fortune in it's day - I can't imagine what it would be worth now but the sentimental value is priceless, I'm sure.

You'll have to remember to take a picture of it around your tree for our annual Decorations thread!

Steven, What a nice train collection. I have my Lionel set from 1955. Several years ago I had the whole set refurbished, (mean cleaned, repaired and shined up, no painting of course). One of the engines I have is a Pennsylvania GG1 electric with working pantographs. I just do not have the time to set up. I also belong to the National TCA, (Train Collectors Association). Their headquarters are in Strasburg, PA. If you want to chat more about our collections, my e-mail is in my profile.

Take Care

Ray

I got the more cheesey

'70s version, the Silver Star set. Much more plasticy and inexpensive (relatively) but I love it anyways. I have not set it up in years. I got it when I was 11, then would get accessories at Christmas for a few years after. I have the electronic "sound of steam" coal tender. With the extra track I have I can make a pretty good layout.

The vintage car I would love to have is the one that ejects the little helicopter from the train car and it actually flies off!

My old friend Scotty when I was 10 had a really old set. I remember his cars lit too, and had silouettes of people in them. We could never play with Scotty's trains. Scotty was wierd too, one day he was your friend, next day he wasn't. He was one of those guys that would actually tell you to your face, "you're my third best friend, next to David and John".

Hey Scotty, screw you and your trains.

Sorry....where were we?

:-)
