VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Feminists of the world sit down before you read this. The Vatican newspaper says that perhaps the washing machine did more to liberate women in the 20th century than the pill or the right to work.

The submission was made in a lengthy article titled "The Washing Machine and the Liberation of Women - Put in the Detergent, Close the Lid and Relax."

The article was printed at the weekend in l'Osservatore Romano, the semi-official Vatican newspaper, to mark international Women's Day on Sunday.

"What in the 20th century did more to liberate Western women?," asks the article, which was written by a woman.

"The debate is heated. Some say the pill, some say abortion rights and some the right to work outside the home. Some, however, dare to go further: the washing machine," it says.

It then goes on to talk about the history of washing machines, starting with a rudimentary model in 1767 in Germany and ending up with today's trendy launderettes where a woman can have a cappuccino with friends while the tumbler turns.

1- Women were liberated when MEN started to use washers, without shame.

2- True liberation came when the Vatican agreed that girls could (i.e. were allowed to) and should (i.e. it is preferable that they) go to school.

The Vatican did more to thwart science, education and free-thought than many other fine instutions. They should learn to STFU, stay out of politics and work on becoming a more spiritual instituion, IMHO.

No joke!

I remember my Father describing to me what his Mother, me sainted Grandmother, had to endure to do the laundry for their family of 6. If the laundry was the sole responsibility of one person, that person wouldn't have had either the time or the energy to do much else during a week.

History has turned on much less.

What would the Vatican know about washing machines anyway?

The pill and abortion has allowed women to claim ownership over their sexuality and reproduction, which is anathema for the (Catholic) Church. For christ's sake, according to church views, women weren't even supposed to be able to have meaningful and earthshattering orgasms, let alone be allowed to enjoy them. Their only purpose was to stay pure for their husbands, be the vessels of their spawn and enlarge the congregation.

The judaic religions have always sought to subvert female and male sexualtiy for their own ends. Society, by and large, is still burdened with the toxic and unnatural nonsense that religion has managed to ingrain in our broader social consciousness where sex, sexuality, reproduction, love and human relationships are concerned. Sexual and social repression, poor self image, self esteem, self hatred and disempowerment are the trademarks of our esteemed western religions. Not all the washing machines in the world will ever be able to wash clean and liberate the Vatican from its legacy of filth, lies and human suffering that is the Catholic Church (and that goes for all the other idiotic relgions as well).
