the washer and dryer on Bewitched

Hey guys, I have always wondered what brand washer and dryer was on the set of Bewitched in the kitchen that they would show by the back door. I know later on in the series when they remodeled Darrin and Samatha's house it was a Maytag. But in the beginning of the series I can't seem to tell what they are?

I know that, and thought of that when the big Impala darted across the screen. But that was Chevy's TOL car in 1965. I think the Caprice debuted in 1966, that's how I rememberr it. It was an Impala trim package in the middle of the 1965 model year, but 1966 was what I consider it's first year because it was it's on product line and not a spiffed up Impala. My dad bought a 1966 Impala SS in October and he & I started looking at them and I remember the Caprice being pointed iout as a new mmodel then. [this post was last edited: 9/8/2010-22:36]

and i know that in the very first ep the pilot episode the washer and dryer was a center dial maytag i think and they where avocado and they change for the gm fridgedair when they where filming the ep in the house

I LOVED that house! I even remember as a kid drawing the floor plan!
As for that range, I only ever saw one in reality once - I went over to a school friend's place, and they had one. So cool, with that drawer-like pull-out stove top.

You just about got it. The Caprice was a package option in 1965, making the Impala more of a luxury car than a sporty car. In 1966 The Caprice became it's own model or series as they called it then, which pretty much tied it up with the Impala as the flagship model. Of course depending on if you wanted a sporty version(Impala), or luxury version(Caprice).

I remember a couple of shows Larry Tate or I could be wrong drove a 1968 Caprice Coupe w/closing headlamps, deep dish Chevrolet Motor Divison wheels and a 396 engine, I believe this model also had the shift console and was only one of maybe three model years that a Caprice ever had closing headlamps. Would this have been considered a unbadged Caprice SS?

Maybe GM thought Caprice was to refined to wear a SS badge? Wasn't Caprice named after some fancy restaurant in New York City that was a GM exec's hang out?

Caprice means "changing at a whim" or always switching your mind at a moment's notice. Maybe there was a NYC restaurant by that name, I as a native will have to check.

I do not ever remember there being a Ford Falcon convertible! The car's whole selling feature was basic compact transportation in sedan and wagon configurations.

Bob, the Caprice was actually introduced in 1965

as a TOL trim option for the Impala 4 door hardtop. In 1966 it became a full fledged series. Chevy did the same thing with the introduction of the Impala in 1958. They made the Impala 2 door hardtop and convertible the top of the Bel Air series. Then in 1959 Impala was the TOL series, Bel Air moved to MOL and Biscayne took over for The Delray series as the BOL....PAT COFFEY[this post was last edited: 9/9/2010-12:43]

Wasn't the Delray a one year only model? I don't remember any in 57 or 59.

In 1970 when Bewitched went to Salem, MA they used Pontiac cars in the episodes. I remember Larry driving a huge Pontiac Parisianne when he and Darrin went out to find Samantha & Serena.

In the last two years of Bewitched, what brand of auto did they use?

If I remember correctly,One of the original episodes had a top loading Kenmore portable dishwasher with a see through window on it. I had only seen one like it at Sears and it was not for home use,just a display. I always wondered if that was actually an available model for home use or if Sears just gave it to them as a promo.

The Delray was first offered in 1954 as a trim option on the 210 2 door club coupe. It replaced the unpopular 210 2 door hardtop coupe of 1953 which was discontinued (along with the equally unpopular 1953 210 convertible) for 1954. The only difference bewteen the 210 Delray coupe and the 210 2 door sedfan was that the Delray had a unique waffle styled interior. The Delray remained a 210 2 door club coupe trim optipn through 1957. For 1958 the Delray became a full fledged series. Alas that was for only one year because in 1959 the Impala became a full fledged series in it's own right knocking the Bel Air (of which the Impala was a sub series in 1958) and Biscayne series down a notch and booting the Delray series right out the door.

As for Larry Tate driving a Pontiac Parisenne in 1971...he would have only been doing that in Canada, if it was an American Pontiac it was a Bonneville. Parisenne's did not start being sold in th is country in place of the old Bonneville until 1983. That happened because Pontiac discontinued the Bonneville and Catalina after 1981 to meet the ever tightening CAFE requirements. They then took the Bonneville name and slapped it on the old Lemans 4 door sedan and advertised it as the Bonneville G, Pontiac's new full sized car. But then the goverenment decide to relax there CAFE requirements a little so Pontaic realized they could bring back the old Full sized models back. Meanwhile Pontiac of Canada never stopped making the old full sized car which they called the Parisenne (FYI the Parisenne was first offered in Canada in 1959) so Pontiac just decided it would be easier to import the cars from Canada. They also felt it would cause less confusion if they just called it the Parisenne like they did in Canada instead of renaming the Bonneville G something else for the second time since 1981 FYI all Canadian Pontiacs were Chevy cars with Pontiac trim and wheel bases , so while we had Wide Trak Pontiacs in the US they only had them in Canada if they were American imports. I am not sure when they stopped or if they ever stopped that practice.....PAT COFFEY

I'm quite certain the Frigidaire laundry equipment was the Rollermatic series, which debuted in 1964.

Robert said this best back in 2007 - the only thing I would ad is the Maytag washer was a pushbutton 900 series machine. When they colored the first season they should have choose either Coppertone or Turquoise as Avocado was not available until 1967.

Welcome Mischa, what a fabulous web site you have! Very creative. There were four different washers on bewitched, the first was a 1964 Maytag set in the NYC apartment for the first two episodes. Once they moved into 1164 Morning Glory Circle in Westport the first time I believe that they showed a washer was in the middle of the 2nd season. They used a Middle-of-the-Line 1965 Frigidaire washer and dryer for that shot. I posted a screen capture of that scene here a few years ago. Then from 1967 thru 1971 or so they used a 1966/1967 WCIL model like Davy posted above. Do you any screen shots of that machine, if so please post them? In the last season or two they went back to an early 1970's Maytag set.

Hello everybody!

I am new to this site but figured I would chime in. Bewitched was sponsored by Chevrolet so there were lots of different model Chevrolet cars featured on the show. Sometimes cars would be different episode to episode. Eventually Larry pretty much drove the current model Corvette. I didn't hear anybody mention a Corvair either witch (which) was used a few times. The Corvair is even featured in a famous Bewitched blooper. And because I am proud of it I will tell you all, I have two Frigidaire Flair ovens. One single oven unit and a double oven unit just like the one used on Bewitched in season 1 & 2. Yeah, I know I'm wierd. Btw, I am picking up an avocado green dryer today that is in perfect working order. I didn't get to look at to closely but it has a push button control panel. I'll take pics and post them in the next few days. I am also having the rest of my appliances painted avocado green next month. I am tired of trying to find the "right" appliances.

That's all I have to say about that.

Drewz they didn't make a Caprice SS that I'm aware of. Since the SS stands for Super Sport, that would have been more for the Impala since the Impala was the sporty version of that car, hence the Impala SS.

The Biscayne was the stripped down bottom of the line economy model and the Bel-Air one step above that. Still on the economy side with out being totally stripped.

Oh and as far as how the Caprice name came about, according to Wikipedia, it was either named after a classy restaurant Bob Lund (Chevrolet General Sales Manager) frequented, as Jsneaker mentioned. Or, it may have been named after Caprice Chapman, the daughter of auto executive and Indy-Car official James P. Chapman. No one is sure of which story is true.

Appliances On Bewitched...

Well, guys I have the complete bewitched DVD series of all the years...we collect them and it was a GM set up "COMPLETE"...the Flair Range, Imperial dishwasher and washer and dryer, all Frigidaire....before and after the fire...(on the kitchen set)...MY GOD....no maytags anywhere, not with Samantha...a CLIENT OF MINE has the Flair Range with the double top ovens and I think it is a 40 incher...with cabinet unit below with exhaust and overhead light pullout....Used everyday and still PERFECT>>>>>I will watch the George & Martha Washington series and check out the model of the Frigidaire Washer and dryer....In the very first Pilot, there was a portable toploader dishwasher and it is a Frigidaire, when Samantha is explaining her involvement with this mortal, she seems to be falling in love with, Darrin, to her Mother, Endora>>>who is sitting behind and ARRIVES on top of the counter area....the dishwasher is directly in front and to the left..I can answer any questions about the Bewitched series you may have....studied it for years....Luv those Frigidaire YEARS!!!!! LOVED Elizabeth Montgomery & Her DAD........
