The TV's to the left of the Admiral combo are a 1957 RCA and on top of it is RCA's first small portable circa 1955.......

Love that 1947 Admiral Entertainment Center-Looks mint.And the Seashell "Bias light"-you need one of those for todays home theater!I see advertisements for that Admiral Hi-Fi and TV in my 1940's and 50's Better Homes and Gardens Magazines.Admiral sure built 'em GOOD in those days-and to last-since the unit still works today.-And at least you can fix'em up.I would like to try to see a Hi-Fi or TV built today-running 50 years from now!
In a home we lived in the late 60's there was a "saucer" light fixture in our dining room-my stepmom didn't like it-but I thought it was pretty neat and useful-you could vary the height.
Another thing on "bias lights" Philips makes a plasma set that has what they call "Ambilight"that lights to the same brightness and color to the pixture on the TV-has a built in bias light and also sort of resembles the "Halolight" TV from Sylvania.

Jimmy-- I LOVE your Admiral TV/Stereo! This is what I admire about the compatibility of television (and, inversely, hate about computers); you can take a set from 1947, plug it in and watch TV in 2005. All this nonsense about DVD's formatted for specific regions drives me nuts.
Second only to washing machines, I'm a maniac for old, automatic record players. I see you're playing some old 78's, too. Excellent!

Thanks frig, like you I love the retro stuff. Is my way of saying that the world is changing too fast, and we need to slow down and take a look back. In fact, when people ask me where I live, I always reply: In the Past! HA! I love my 78's and play them quite often. The sound is not high tech, but then it wasnt supposed to be. The imperfections only add to the patina of it all. I have a phonograph that plays 78's in every room of my house (except the bathrooms of course!) from Zenith Cobra's to Philco's to RCA Orthophonics, to Magnavox Micromatics. They all work (most of the time!) and also love to play the radios in them. Its just a shame that there is not more and better music on the dials now. Todays music is not for me......alas.

btw, Admiral advertised its combo as "America's Smart Set" and its NOT a stereo, its a phonograph!

When I was growing up my parents had the same
Admiral console as you have pictured there. I used to lay on the floor and put my little feet up on the wood work across the speaker under the screen and watch TV. One day the doctor made a house call (yes, they did those back then) and when he saw me so close to the TV set he boomed out "get your butt away from that TV screen, you'll ruin your eyes!" I wasn't expecting that and since I think I was only 3 or 4 at the time I pushed back from the television using my feet only to break the wooden woodwork on the speaker and to also put my foot through the speaker! You should have heard my mothers's response! Fortuntely, the Admiral dealer was able to fix it up like new again. I think this was 1953 or something like that...

Great stuff Jimmy! And I love those ceramic clocks you have. How nice that you have your moms original one. (the fact that it was a wedding gift to your parents,and that you and your brother broke it all those years ago makes for an interesting story too.)
