So what is that in the round hole of the duct?
The duct in question corresponds to #1 on this diagram. The round opening connects to #11.
Funguy, the Calypso-match dryer is built on Whirlpool's 27" dryer platform, which has a different design and airflow pattern than the 29" dryer. It does not have this duct.
Where is/was this dryer vented to - a shoe box? I've worked on lots of these but have never seen anything that bad. Did they use the filter-hole as a trash can?

When the dryer was in the customer home it was crushed or disconnected as the right side of the dryer was covered in lint
The inside was also covered in lint I am surprised the dryer didn't go up in flames
Yes I think they took out the lint from the filter then stuffed back down the hole in the top hoping the fan in the bottom would blow it out
