Also,

I own a business and am required by law to buy insurance for that as well. Surely you can't open up a business in America without the correct insurance cover?

Until Now, the Answer Is Yes

There isn't a mandate for any employer in the United States to provide insurance, though that will now change under Obamacare.

Indeed it has been said one of the disadvantages some companies and businesses located outside of the United States had was that they didn't offer health insurance, thus had lower costs per employee.

I don't understand people being upset at being forced to have some insurance.

In order to keep insurance costs lower, a mixture of high and low risk persons would need coverage. It makes sense that the younger, healthier people might not feel the need to get insurance. If I didn't have insurance through my work, I could see myself thinking I could cut that and go do something else with that income.

This being said, I would hope there would be some reform of the welfare/foodstamp/EBT system to help those that are on it to make healthier choices with my money. It still burns my butt to watch people ring up junk food with those cards.

Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath? This guy should hang his head in shame and stack shelves at Walmart.

Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

From what I've been told, the medical community no longer makes it been mandatory for up and coming doctors to swear by it. It has been like that for some time now.

Contrary to popular belief, the Hippocratic Oath is not required by most modern medical schools.

I would not let a moron like that touch me anyway.

Like it or not, the USA will adapt to the new health care bill. The bill will not be reversed, or overturned.

In the case of car insurance,

Washington state, where I live, requires you to buy auto insurance liability coverage. However, I do not HAVE to drive a car. Driving is a choice. I don't HAVE to open up a business. There is a huge, huge difference here. This health bill is essentially requiring you to buy insurance or pay a fine just for being alive! Free country my ass! What next? Are people willing to let Uncle Sam make all their decisions for them?

Well, let folks that don't want it sign a waiver. After years of working in hospitals i have seen lots of road rash, wind shields wrapped around heads like turbins, even a water skier with a flail chest that took a ride through a boat propeller. It's just ridiculous to consider that anything could happen to a young adult. Not to mention that this age group thinks nothing will ever go wrong. However when they sign that waiver, they need to acknowledge that if an accident occurs it was their choice to pay on a hospital bill, till they are about 100 years old. alr2903

In some cases absolutely yes. I mean that is what you all are paying them for, to formulate policies that are beneficial for the citizens of your country. Sometimes we have to look beyond the 'me, myself and I.'

Health care, like public education, is an investment in your population and your nation's future. Not having to worry about the affordability of health care is a form of freedom also.

The problem with the American health system is that health care and preventative health care are treated like any other consumer product or service. Health is not a consumer product or service, it is a state of being. There is a huge difference between wanting the latest washing machine and not being able to buy it and having a serious illness/injury and not being able to access/afford medical care.

I understand that Obama had to tone down his original bill to get the reforms passed. Instead of waving stupid 'kill the bill' signs, maybe it would be more constructive to start lobbying against corporate interference in public health policy processes. Don't bag out on Obama, go to the real source of the problem.

Got the final call from the hospital

Knew it was going to be what I did not want to hear.

Mr Mc Michael ??? Yes ... A firm voice lady states .. I am Sorry but we are going to have send Ms Melton back to the care center. There is nothing we can do here for her that they cannot do there. We need the bed for someone we can help.. I said Oh I see you mean someone got a cat scrach this morning.. Her reply I do understand your feelings.. I asked do you have a aunt who almost 100 and has told you the most important day in her life will be to see 100 candles on her birthday cake.. she replied no.. I said then you DO NOT KNOW How I feel and HOW outraged that I am with your Playschool Hospital. I told her that November 1 of this year I will have been a Certifited Hospital Laundry Manager for 40 Years ,and NEVER in all the years have I ever seen or even been told of such inhumane treatment of a old lady. 4 Paws Hospital (kitty hospital) down the street would have been a BETTER place to have taken her.She then said, When her time comes she will be happier to die where she knows. I said thank you so very much for that reassureing information. She then said you will need to contact the Business office Monday there is a 63,000 balance that is not covered by Medicare/ Medicade.. So this is the way things are NOW!

A little more

I would understand this all if she were in a coma or something else.. But she is awake from time to time. can speak and knows who is with her and not. and tells us the pain hurts her so bad please help me.. Give me something to stop the pain she begs.. They tell us they have given all that the DRs allow.

" This health bill is essentially requiring you to buy insurance or pay a fine just for being alive! "

I hope people who make statements like that realize that the mandatory private insurance provision was a hallmark feature of Republican health care reform proposals dating back to President Nixon.

It would seem that only when the Democrats embraced the concept that Republicans decided against supporting it, and have been using it actively to oppose the reform bill.

Partisan politics, and a misinformed public.

Sudsman,

What hospital is your aunt at? I'm originally from DFW and I'm enraged after reading your posts. Can she be transferred to another place like Presbyterian Dallas? My mom had a serious disease that finally took her life 5 years ago. Presbyterian was nothing short of great.

I would contact local media with your story.

David

AMH Harris and Presbyterian are all owned by Texas Healthcare now. And nothing near the same as they were 2 or even 3 years ago. In all the advertising the motto used is " Manageing the Business of Healthcare" to them that is all it is a business. nothing else. and they intend to make money no matter what. Articles like this are in the Telegram and DMN every day now.. No one in this area pays them any mind any more. It happens so much of the time.. Not usually in this bad of a case but have been told that had changed too. So glad it is not one of "our hospitals" or I could not work here anymore. The "care center " was NOT really any better about it either. so much for care. They even told me that I need to make the arrangements asap as they need to "ship her out" for another one to come it. They could not afford to loose money on empty beds.. This nation is in deep doo doo and very few even realize it. But you all will soon!

Whatever happened to the Hippocratic Oath?

the Banana boat drs dont even take it they cant pronounce most of the words. It is against most of their religions (WICCA) I think .. I work with a number of them and most are total assholes. I tell them where to go every chance I get.

Lee, I am sorry for your hurt in this situation. I do not know your aunt's medical condition, but if she is in great pain, have you considered a palliative care program where the main plan of action is to keep her comfortable? I don't think a hospital is necessarily required for it. One thing you have to take into account if you have her medical POA is that as more and more pain medication is needed, it will suppress the respiratory reflex and hasten her death. If living to her 100th birthday is the goal you share with her, total remission of the pain will probably not be possible.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.
