All the tires back then were junk, so were the primitive drumb brakes but at least all the cars were equal pretty much in that regard.
We had plenty of old cars with bias ply tires when I was a kid and I seem to remember getting some early radials on one of them and how much better it drove.
Had a slant six Dart I got cheap and it needed a front tire badly so I got a junk yard tire and wheel all mounted for next to nothing. It threw the balance out so bad with 3 radials on the other wheels it was dangerous and I had to find a used good matched set just to safely drive the car. It had 9" drumb brakes too, you had to plan ahead to stop sometimes. My Dart is a factory V8 car so it got the bigger 10" ones and at the time stopped pretty good as long as I had decent shoes installed.
I have all the parts to do the big bolt disk brake conversion but car is retired now but should make a huge difference in stopping power. It's amazing sometimes the crap everyone drove because that's just the way it was and what you could buy cheap.

I remember the Goodyear radio commercial "it's the radial age' in 1966-67 with the popular sign of the times song which Petula Clark made a hit.
General Tire made the safety film. It seems the lady wanted a tire swing, but adds always appealed to the purse strings of most household budgets.
Most of our safety is between our ears, like slowing down on wet and slick roads.
Good tread is essential also. Now we even have run flat tires, and most cars don't come with a spare.
I looked at the map of the John C. Lodge freeway. Web avenue, and Glendale, just like in the film, so it was made in Detroit.

Snow tires and 4-Wheel Drive and ABS and all the other electronic wonders mean nothing when there's a nut loose right between the steering wheel and driver's seat.
You can't teach them anything. They already know it all.

Ah! yes,
I like the English terminology, bonnet, boot, wind screen, etc.
Laundress, we have some drivers around here like that as well. Maybe I'm just getting older, so I notice it more. Some drive too fast, some too slow, and some still text while driving. There is a guard base nearby here.
One of our newer neighbors is Chaldean, and never had grass in Iraq. His wife wore a tire track in the lawn next to the drive with her van. He attempted to edge his sidewalk and lawn with an electric chainsaw.
I kindly offered my edger and safety glasses.
With the first snow two years ago, he got a large double auger snow thrower and was using it in bare feet and sandals to clear his drive way. I used a broom.
Another guy, about 27 was using his lawn tractor and plow.

People with 4 wheel drives always forget you can go fine but stopping is another manner entirely. I always ran 4 wheel studs on my Dart because I discovered one day no grip on the front on ice would lead to no grip for steering on the front wheels. Bounced over a curb, nocked a big rock outa the ground, and back down again without any damage to my car. Put studs on the front and always had 4 studs mounted for the few winters they were needed after that. Too many just lock up the brakes then find out all control is gone yet they wont let up. Antilock brakes help, so does traction control, especially most drivers that really have no clue how to really drive a car. I did cookies in parking lots in the snow and it taught me what my car would do and how to control it in bad situations. Brakes many times make it worse and better to steer out of it.
