As I was running our dishwasher (and washing machine) today, I got to thinking...

What companies make private-label detergent pods?

I know that Huish/Sun/Henkel had the monopoly on private-label products, at least when it came to laundry detergents. However, I recently purchased laundry detergent pods from Lidl (US), and these pods do NOT look like a Henkel product. In fact, when looking at the back label, it stated that the product was made in Spain.

As far as dishwasher tablets go, it appears as though most of the store brands (as well as some brands using "brand names" - ie; Clorox dishwasher pods) are all made by the same company. Not sure who is making them for the US markets.

Those "Complete Clean" detergent pods sold in the US look identical to "Formil" pods sold in Spain.
Lidl.es proudly claims that many of their detergents sold in Spain are made locally in Andalusia. Spanish private label manufacturer Persán is located in Sevilla a city in Andalusia which leads me to believe we might have a match here.

It never ceases to amaze me how little competition there is in the US when it comes to private labels. So many products appear to come from the same factory no matter where you buy.

Coincidentially I arrived on Gran Canaria yesterday and had to stock up some groceries because I only have accomodation with a small kitchenette no meals provided.

So while Lidl is not my prefered store here in Spain because they don't have a lot of convinient small packages of things which are essentiell for a short vaccation I thought I just had to pop in and check their detergents out.
The Formil tabs they currently have in stock seem to have advanced into a three chamber variety and just as I suspected they are made by Persan!

I agree with Tom Turbomatic. I have soft water. The laundry and dishwasher pods have too much detergent for both. They exacerbated the etching of glass in my WP/KA dishwasher and are overkill for small laundry loads needed by us single people and widowers.

More Tide

WTF? Have y'all seen the advertisements for more Tide in Tide pods. The tagline is "you're gonna need more Tide." My first thought is what about the people who don't need more Tide--small loads, lightly soiled loads?

And for those of you with experience, how much detergent is the right amount for small and medium loads? We loved Tide Free powder, but it is no longer available. We are trying Tide and Gain regular formulas in powder. It seems like the liquids and pods are taking an increasingly large market share.

Hytron dishwasher pods

We switch off between regular Hytron powder and pods. In the nearly 30 years our family has been using this brand it has never let us down, EVER. The original powder contains chlorine and STPP.

I have a very aging box of Cascade powder I never use, having forsaking it for pods for my dishwasher...

Occasionally only the lower rack gets filled but I'm going to stick with this new method of soaping until some other novelty in detergents comes out...

I even just buy a small pack of those pods and refill my latest container, and found the Express 60 cycle on my dishwasher designed to wash everything in an hour only allows Sanitizing and not the Storm Wash I can use on the Heavy Cycle that I use for every load no matter how dirty or not so dirty everything is going in...

It will just be these more convenient pods, not the powder that I'd notice residue of that wouldn't get completely rinsed out of my previous dishwashers I'll resign myself to just to not have to wash everything over again, which I seldom have to in any case...
