well....seems this 59 whirlpool that i thought i could fix just didnt make it..it sort of died on the table..the machine wouldnt spin so after checking all the moving parts on the bottom i figured it had to be something to do with the main tube and the spin tube..when i went to slide the trans assy out the spin tube bound in the main tube..tried to tap it free but that only jammed up the entire thing..so now the spin tube is frozen in the main tube..all i can do now it find a diffrent superstructer for the machine..so now i cant decide if i should just give up and scrap the whole thing or start looking for a good running 60s belt drive and rob the guts to fix this one.. i hate to trash the machine cause its so cute..does anyone have a good running pool

Sorry it didn't work out...if you decide to Krush it then keep the top panel/lid assembly, agitator, lint filter, and any other important parts!

How new of a transmission will fit? I find BD's from the mid to late 70's all the time,probably have one in my storage.

not totally sure but im thinkin as long as its a standard tub it should work..when i was at the convention greg had the top to a 64-65 pool sitting there and i remember telling him that it was the exact one that my mom had when i was little. i remember him saying that the tops would inner change. so id guess that the guts should too. if you have time you want to go look around and see what you have? thanks chris

It will come apart but you will have to work really hard at it. First remove the top trans and spin tuhe seals. Clean any corrosion from the top of the drive shaft and spin tuhe to make it easier to remove. Use some WD40 or Deep Creep on the spin tube and agitator drive shaft. Both on top and on the bottom if there is enoough sticking out to get at the bottom of the spin tuhe. Leave it work in for a couple days then try it again. Then remove the transmission separately. Disconnect the spring on the clutch actuator plate and also the clip and spring on the oposite side of the plate. Remove the pump if you haven't already. Disconnect the wig-wag wires, again if you haven't already. Put the transmission in agitate hy pushing up on the agitate plunger and turning the trans pulley intil the slide is all the way to the end. This will hold the agitator shaft from turning inside the spin tube. It will be eashier to remove this way. Then grab hold of the trans and try to turn it back and forth to loosen it from the spin tuhe. Like I said it will take alot of work but it will come apart eventually. If you can get the trans out but the spin tuhe is still stuck keep working it by turning it and using the WD40. If the spin tube is still stuck after you remove the trans you may be able to cut the tube off with a hack saw and push it back out the top. Don't give up on it yet. Good luck.

I have had excellent results using "PB Blaster" spray penetrant. Also maybe if you put the torch to it and heat the exterior of the tube the expansion will be enough to allow the tranny to slide out. Hope you will be able to save this one.

Geeze, man, I hope you take fixerman's advice and keep working at it. I don't know squat about the vintage washers -- but I sure hate to see a vintage beauty light this hit the heap if there's even a remote possibility of saving it. Especially so in this case, given the great restorations you do.

i have been thinking it over and honestly i hate the idea of trashing this machine..so i did a little web surfing and i think i may have found the parts i need.. the site is affordable appliance and they seem real nice..so ill give this a shot and see what goes..

I know I have a early to mid 70's WP there,and a similar Kenmore. I'll have to look and see if they're large capacity or not.

Don't Junk it!

First thing....set the machine upright and remove the top. Remove the top tub shroud. Take the agitator out. Remove the nut at the top that holds the tub onto the spin tube. If the tub won't come out, stand in the tub with soft (gym) shoes and DO THE Chubby Checker Twist! The tub WILL loosen and when it does, remove it. Remove the agitator block.... just saw it off as they are still available. If you're this far, which is where I think you are, work the tranny from the bottom. The bearring in the outer tub structure might be binding on the basket drive spin tube, thus causing the jam. Work the tranny from the bottom, while a friend taps it (using the wood block and hammer) from the top. You're NOT going to damage the tranny so line up the block and hit it hard. IT WILL COME OUT. Once it is out, take the same (I use a metal jigsaw blade broken in half and taped to protect my hands) and carefully cut out the old bearring. (Use a socket to tap a new bearring back in) These really are one of the easiest machines to work on. Now get back in there and DON'T GIVE UP!!! Mark

The advice the guys gave above is the same they gave me, and it's absolutely true--even with my Kenmore's unfortunate end, the spin tube was workable, though it was a MOTHER to get out, and it took a lot of WD-40, yanking, and expletives to get the thing free. Don't give up--and I wish you the best on this--what you've done is beautiful so far!

well

after all the notes above ill give it a good try.. the whole machine is apart except for the spin tube that is stuck in the main tube. i tired to tap it out but that just made it worse..its totally stuck, so now as long as i can find the super structure..at least all the parts are out and all cleaned and pretty again..so when she gets back together it will look like new on the inside too.. if nothing else it has been a wonderful learning experence to say the least ha ha.
