Thoughts? Opinions?

I'm revealing more of my appliance disorder little by little.
I'm "coming clean" to some family members.
This Whirlpool pair belongs to a family member. They came with their condo, so I don't even know what year they are.
Can you tell anything about them from this picture, or would you need model/serial numbers? I'm not opposed to asking them for that information as well.
I'm just curious about how you would rate them. And, I know that's subjective, and opinions vary.
Like I said; I'm just wondering what some of y'all think about these, since they were just shared with me.

Probably is a typical mid-line set, two-speed washer without separate speed control and possibly extra rinse option.  Dryer probably thermostatic auto-dry.

And the blue shipping-protective film hasn't been peeled off the consoles.

Lol. I wondered about that. I've never seen these machines in person. I wonder if they know. Maybe they just like the blue.
I'll see if I can get numbers, for more detailed information.
But thank you for the input.
I just appreciate professional opinions on how good or bad a machine is.

Very Good Machines

Yes they need to remove the blue film before even thinking of washing another load of clothing, leaving it on can ruin the finish on the control panels.

I'll tell them about the blue film. However, they've already lived in this condo for a few years, and the machines were already there. Might it already be too late to remove it? I don't want to be responsible for damaging the panels.
Like I said, this picture is the first glimpse I've gotten of the machines, and I'm sure they have no idea. I guarantee, they just think the machines have blue control panels.

coming out of the closet

Barry, you've cautiously thrown open the closet door it appears.  Let the sunlight shine on your appliance infection.  Let the air help to heal the appliance scar that has afflicted this special group.

 

These are from around 2002 and I like that console shape with the tapered ends.

 

I agree that the "blue shipping-protective film hasn't been peeled off the consoles" in the nearly 20 years that these have co-existed with us on earth, along with COUNTLESS other appliances running as programmed out in the wild, that still adorn their light blue, beige, and clear shipping film.

 

And while at one point in my life I would have been a strict "TEAR IT OFF BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS" kind of person, I will humbly beg the attention of fellow AW members who appreciate the retro colors of the past.

 

Does this blue not resemble the early 60s pastel blue?  And the appliances that have the beige film, does it not resemble the beige they had in 60s and early 70s?  Perhaps even almond or bisque?

 

Can we appreciate that is has survived nearly 20 years and not destroyed the machine or the lives of the machines owners?  

With all the turmoil in the world, can we just let this issue be?

I'm surprised. I would have thought these machines were a lot newer than that.
Armed with that information, I wonder if it would be better to just leave the blue film alone at this point, rather than risk damaging the panels by trying to remove it.
I agree that it doesn't look bad.
I'll see if I can get numbers off of them, to even better hone in on when they were made.

I was given a Kenmore Calypso console a few years ago that has it on the touch panel area with a paper label "Remove Protective Film."  I've tried peeling it off, not so much luck.  Maybe a hair dryer to soften the adhesive would be helpful.

I've seen years-old machines for sale on CraigsList and Facebook Marketplace with the blue film, that has an advisory "Remove Protective Film" or words to that effect ink-jet printed on it.  The blue color is a bit catchy but the labeling is not a nice appearance, LOL.

Just start at a corner, if it comes off easily remove it, if it gives you a hard time leave it as it may be too late, even though the blue is pretty it looks like crap close up and makes the panels harder to read.

Film on the Calypso panel is clear so at least there's that.

These models were near the end of the white-on-white, black-on-black, bisque-on-bisque trend of the 90s and early 2000's .

 

It was around 2003-2004 and I went to Best Buy to look at appliances as one often does.   

I was just looking and found the white on white MOL whirlypool set.  I didn't buy then. 

 

A few months later I wanted to buy and went back to BB to buy and was shocked and horrified as they no longer had the W-o-W machines and nearly everything was being switched over to ......... UGHHH,  ...stainless steel !   or even worse.... faux S.S (gray plastic, lol).....   which the laugh at how pathetic and desperate one had to be to create, helped to take the edge off.  LOL

 

Plus the new models had the grossly over sized knobs that...... just no.

 

Obviously, I didn't buy anything.  Frankly, I don't think I've bought any appliances from BB since.  Not that I intended for that.  I've bought a few other things.  Just not appliances.

 

So, yeah, I remember.

It's not a computer monitor or smart phone screen.  Once you've read your appliance escutcheon, it doesn't change.   lol.

Info for the dryer. Don't have washer info yet, but I'm sure they're of very similar vintage.

Ironically, I just got a text yesterday from the owner of these machines.
The dryer just stopped working. Specifically, won't start. They have a repairman coming.
Any ideas in the meantime? Not that I can do anything for them. Just curious, so we can compare notes when I find out what the tech finds.
Maybe it's the blue film!

Dead dryer

Yes they should have removed the blue film, LOL

 

Most likely things that make a dryer go suddenly dead are bad door switch, open thermal fuse, burned connection at the terminal block due to poor installation [ we  know that it was a quick and shoddy installation because the blue film was left on, we never leave tape and films on new appliances we install ]

 

Be sure they have checked the circuit breaker and be sure the plug is pushed all the way in the receptacle.
