I received a solicitation from AAA Auto Club South, based in Tampa. The usual offer of roadside assistance and other services are offered. The application form asked for my name etc. Also, the offer included the ability to sign up another person. The application wanted to know the relationship of the other person, which I filled in on the blank line as "partner". I went ahead and signed up.

In the mail, I received a letter indicating that my partner is "Ineligible". "This person does not meet the conditions of an associate as outlined by the Club"

The letter futher informs the requisites are: "The spouse of the Master Member, dependent children under age 21 living in your home, and through the age 25 if attending an institution of continuing education as a student"

This detail was absent from the original solicitation.
The letter went on to say, another membership can be purchased by calling their toll-free number.

Isn't this nice??

Another practical example of why we need to keep pushing for marriage equality!

If those are AAA's terms, they aren't discriminating as long as partners of the opposite sex are also ineligible.

I'm an AAA member---have been all my adult life---and if they send me one of those offers, I'll fill it out with the name of a female friend of mine. We'll see if they accept or reject it.

Different AAA chapters have different rules, e.g. Mid-Atlantic AAA offers its associate member discount to any second adult, regardless of whether the person is related to the primary member. AAA South limits its discount to legal spouses and children. I'm not at all surprised, considering where the chapter is based.

Hmm,

The ADAC (German equivalent of the AAA) offered memberships to partners before it was law.

Guess the AAA in your area are just either unaware (best case) or mega christianist.

Why not write back a polite letter asking? Then, if they respond nicely, great. If they are nasty, you can then publish all correspondence to the net and screw the christianists over with the gay community.

Remind me again why a gay man would vote Republican?

In MA...

With AAA Southern New England, you can sign up another "household member." IIRC, that's how they termed it. Again, IIRC, they didn't ask for Rich's relationship to me. The only requirement was apparently that we had the same address.

I'm rather surprized there's so much variation in this. You'd think that AAA would have a pretty standard policy that's been scrutinized by their legal department, no matter where the chapter is located.

here in minnesota...

i just put the partner's name on the application & it went fine. we even have our insurance together. sadly, florida is known for not being to "friendly". maybe a letter to your state rep. might...ignite more hatred? or maybe not.

AAA is a great start, we pay two separate bills, in each name. You see gay households have to have to incomes, look at the great f#### errr sex we get on auto insurance. It really is time to go to Washington with some creative signs. As Bill Maher said, yes President Obama "is our guy" but "this, is not what i voted for". I don't really think it is the Prez but the buffoon's he is surrounded with.
