I live in an apartment and have to make do with coin operated Neptunes. To add insult to injury, I have no choice but to use "Free and Clear" laundry products. I was excited to learn that P&G had finally introduced a "Free" version of Tide HE, but I haven't been able to find it ANYWHERE. (I sent an e-mail to Tide and they suggested that I speak to the manager(s) of my favorite retalers.) Has anyone in the New York area been able to find a retailer that carries Tide Free HE? Surely I can't be the only one who has this problem.

Thanks in advance!

Mike

Have not seen it either!

Asked ever supermarket manager in our area about ordering it and was told Tide Free HE was not even on their stocklist.

Have been using 1-2 tablespoons of Cheer Free powder and so far so good. It is not a HE detergent, but rinses pretty well, except sometimes with large loads of towels have to add an extra rinse.

Thanks, for the great suggestions Launderess. :-) Unfortunately, the lack of a window on Neptune make monitoring suds levels next to impossible. To add insult to injury, since the ones that I have to use are coin operated, the only way that I could mimic an extra rinse would be to spend $1.75 to rerun the entire cycle for each and every load! EEK! :-(

I spent the a good part of the weekend, e-mailing every supermarket in the New York metro area asking if they had plans to offer Tide Free HE. I pointed out: (1) that most resident of NYC apartments have to use coin operated laundry equipment; (2) that "high efficiency" detergents are recommended for those of us who use front loaders; and (3) that I can't be the ONLY one in the NYC area that had to use a "free and clear" detergent. It's going to be very interesting to see what they have to say. (So far, I've gotten auto-replies saying that they'll be contacting me shortly.)

Thanks again,

Mike

Mike,

If I can use 1-2 tablespoons of Cheer Free poweder in my puny Miele, think you'll be fine with the uber-sized Neptune. You are adding a bit of white vinegar to the final rinse, right?

Whatever you do, avoid All Free and Clear. Does not clean well and suds to the heavans! Gave my near full box away to a top-loader owning friend.

Hi Launderess,

Like you, I was underwhelmed with All Free and Clear.

A nieghbor suggested adding white vinegar to the final rinse. BIG MISTAKE. I have very sensitive skin. The next morning I got dressed out of the laundry basket. Every inch of my body that was covered with clothes felt like it was on fire. The reaction was immediate. My skin was so irritated that it turned red and itched for days. I used half a cap of Tide Free and Bounce Free drier sheets. I had used both in the past without any problems. I suspected that they might be residue from another detergent in the washer (one of the many drawbacks of apartment living) so I tried it again (using less Tide Free) and had similar problems. Sigh!

Wish I could ...

but it would be a violation of my lease and grounds for eviction. Every once is a while, they post a notice by the mailboxes which says something to the effect of "someone in apartment lines b and c has an illegal washing machine in their apartment. The suds are backing up into one of your neighbors' apartments. We will be inspecting each apartment in apartment line b and c. (They have a right to enter apartments under the terms of the lease.) When we find the illegal washing machine we will immediately begin eviction proceedings." They've never lost a washing machine related eviction case. Both the lease and the case law are very specific. Sigh. The apartments are rent controlled. Similar apartments in my area rent for approximately 3 times what I'm currently paying. I wish I could have a portable machine. I literally can't afford it. Sigh.

Thanks for the suggestion and the link. I really appreciate it.

It was just an idea. Have you ever tried the Sears detergent in the powdered form. It does a good job and two of our children that were algeric to other detergents weren't to the Sears. It is low sudsing and seems to rinse out very well.

skin rash and Sears Detergent

I use the powdered Sears Detergent in my '97 Maytag (which doesn't rinse to suit me), and am very pleased with it. I grew up with Tide, and am used to really clean clothes..I find that the Sears formula is indeed low-sudsing and does rinse well. I have no skin problems using it.

About once every two or three months our SEars runs the detergent on sale for $9.99 so we stock up. Not as much now as when we had all six kids at home. Washer seemed to go all the time. Used this for years. We liked the Purex tabs for some items but it is not to be found here. All my children now use the Sears at their homes.

Does anyone have any experience with the Sears liquid versus the Sears powder?

I remember the powder they sold back in the 70s and 80s (the box with the wave design on it), when they only had a couple of formulas, was pretty harsh. Seemed to make colors fade quickly. But it smelled good and came with its own scoop!

I e-mailed one of my local supermarkets re: the availability

Here's a copy of their response:

"Proctor and Gamble has informed us that they don't make a Tide Free HE. Currently they make HE in two scents: Regular and Clean Breeze. Our distributor only carries the Regular of these two which we do stock. For further information, you may want to call Proctor and Gamble at 1-800-832-3012.

Thanks again for writing and being a Kings shopper.

Sincerely,

As soon as I read this, I immediately went to www.tide.com and notice that they no longer list Tide Free HE under their product offerings. I know that I'm not hallucinating. I saw Tide Free HE listed there just a few short weeks ago. Tide and I even exchanged e-mails about it. (They suggested that I look for it at either Target or K-Mart.) I guess this is an example of one hand not knowing what they other was doing at Proctor and Gamble!
Talk about frustrating!

Oh, well. I'll be stopping at Sears over the weekend.

portable washer

Darn, what a drag that you can't even have a portable wahser in your place. I had a friend who had a condominimum where they were forbidden, but yours and his are the only 2 cases I've ever heard of. I wouldn't live in a place as restrictive as that.

Struck out at Sears!

I've been to at least a half dozen Sears in the last few weeks. None of the carry the "free" version of their detergent. I struck out again, when I went to www.sears.com and tried to use the "store pick up" option. (I wanted to save the shipping and handling charges.) I finally had to break down and pay the shipping charges. Grrrrr! (Sigh!)

Thanks, everyone.

I'll keep you posted.
