While at a family dinner yesterday, my cousin and I both discovered that we were "sporting" the same rash. She had just been to her doctor for treatment and he had told her that she had a detergent rash. We both discovered we were Tide users...I use Tide Powder with Bleach, she uses Liquid Tide with Bleach Alternative. Both of us have been long term Tide users with no problems, but all of a sudden we both have the same rash. Anyone else having this problem? Has P&G changed Tide recently? Seems like it gets changed frequently.....I hate to have to quit using Tide after almost a lifetime of using it, because nothing cleans better. (IMHO)

I have psoriasis and have had major problems with detergents for years. I live in an apartment and have to rely on coin operated laundry equiptment. One day I went to do some laundry and discovered that I was out of detergent. I ran around the corner to Rite Aid and bought a bottle of a name brand detergent that I had used before without any problems.

When I went to fold the laundry, I noticed a burning sensation on my hands, but I didn't pay any attention to it.
The next morning I got dressed out of the laundry basket. I left for work shortly after I got dressed. I got on the elevator (I live on the 10th floor) and almost immediately ever part of my body that was covered by clothes felt as if it were on fire. I started frantically pushing buttons and the elevator finally stopped on the 5th floor. I ran up the stairs. I took off my clothes and took another shower. I figured that there was something wrong (I suspected the detergent) with my freshly washed clothes, so I got dressed with clothes that I had washed with a different detergent.

I rewashed the offending laundry with Tide Free. I paid extra to use the "Extra Rinse" cycle. I've been using Tide Free, All Free and Cheer Free ever since and I've never had another problem. I continue to use the "Extra Rinse" cycle whenever I wash my towels, sheets and underwear.

I also use either Downy Free or Bounce Free.

Tide Rash

My mother exclusively used Tide and Tide with Bleach up until around 1998 or so. All of a sudden, my dad, my sister, and I all started getting this rash around our thighs, under our arms, and on our chests. We couldn't for the life of us figure out what the heck the deal was! My dad went to the dermatologist and was told it was "detergent rash" and when asked what kind of detergent was being used, he said "Tide". The dermatologist here in town said he'd seen a lot of that lately, all related to Tide.

So I haven't used Tide since, and nothing else really seems to cause a problem. I did try Tide recently, and it didn't seem to cause much of a problem for me, but if I sweated, then I started to itch so I pitched it out again.

I don't know when they changed Tide, but I do know that as far back as '98 there was an issue with their "improved formula".

IMO its mostly in the rinse------------

Try an extra rinse if using a perf-tub machine. If you are fortunate enough to have a vintage solid-tub machine(s), the overflow rinses are very capable. My WCI-63 has a nearly five minute overflow rinse.

Measring Tide out of a big box into a cup or scoop even caused my hands to break out and crak if Idind't wash them immediately after measuring. The brief times I used Tide, even with extra rinse, did cause some problems for me. I've never been a big fan of Tide because it's so expensive and my clothes just don't get dirty enough to wrrant the price. I did get a bottle of Tide HE with Bleach Alternative on sale at Target last fall. I use it solely for my whites (undies & kitchen towels). I've had no problems with it in my front load Frigidaire, but I always use the xtra rinse and it does have the "enhanced' water level adjustment thanks to Steve 1/18

OVERLOAD

I have talked to very many people regarding "detergent rashes"from doing laundry.I would say that around 85% of them got it from overloading their washers and using way too much..Hello,if you overload a top loading washer, the clothes do not have any roll over and the detergent, especialy powdered detergent, does not desolve and is not going to distribute evenly.I am currently running a laundromat here on the job site and have to stop customers from overloading these SPEED QUEENS.Anyway, front loaders can also be overloaded but,at least the detergent can desolve and be evenly distributed in the load. The other issue is using too much detergent or bleach.Today's laundry detergents are very concentrated. If you watch t.v commercials, you'll see that lately,P&G(Proctor and Gamble),has released ads that specificly show how much more concentrated detergents of there's,specificaly Tide, have more active ingredients and less fillers. However, the lines of measure on their liquid detergent bottles and scoops in their powders are so hard to see that most people use way too much. Some do 2 full scoops!!!Where do I get this info?I get it from regular visits to random laundromats where I'll sit and just observe people doing their laundry.I must say though, there are those ,thank God,who do measure and don't overload. But,most of them have no clue as to how the dispensers work and, using a commercial Speed Queen,Wascomat or Milnor washer that has a pre wash, they put detergent in and leave. The machine gives a 3 minute prewash using the detergent they put in for the mane wash and the main wash has no way of cleaning their load without detergent.I also see them put bleach in imediately giving the detergent no chance of cleaning their whites. When bleach is applied along with detergent at the same time, they cancel each other out.Calgon water softner is great for final rinses in removing excess detergent.

not an overload problem here....

I don't overload and I do measure, but I do realize many are guilty. Having learned "laundry" from my Mom (aka June Donna Cleaver Reed) during the 60's, overloading was almost considered a sin, and it never happened. She turned all of the laundry chores over to me when I was about 12 or so. I'm 54 now and I still sort, load correctly and measure, using hot, warm and cold water. I hope I never have to wash entirely in cold water. Sometimes, (GASP!!!!), I even use warm rinses. Guess I'm just going to have to stop using Tide and switch to something "milder". I won't use any of the free and clear formulas, as I like some fragrance in my clothes, but I do hate the overpowering fragrances of some of the new detergents. So far, All and Purex seem to be the best for me. Have been using them recently and the rash has diminished. Hopefully, it will soon be gone. And just as an aside to this: my two machines are an '87 Maytag and a '97 Maytag. The '87, with a 90 second spray rinse followed by a deep rinse, rinses much better than the newer one, which has a 15 second spray rinse followed by a deep rinse and another 15 second spray rinse.

I've never had any problems with Tide but my sister's boyfriend (both live with us currently) has some serious detergent allergies. I tried many different detergents for him before settling on All Free and Clear powder and Downy Free and Clear liquid. Even Dreft gives him a rash!!!

Let's not talk about Dreft! That gave me one of my worst detergent related psoriasis flares.

I use coin operated Neptunes. I load them loosely. (I've seen some of my neighbors really overstuff them!) I'm concerned about detergent residue from some of my neigbors (the laundry room sometimes smells like a perfume factory) but -- knock on wood -- so far I haven't had any problems in that regard.

Nothing cleans better???

Sears Ultra Plus detergent does and WILL not give you a rash either! and only cost about half what tide does.

OMG the Gadget has a box of Tide that is used occasioanlly. That may explain the itchies I get.

For sensitive skin, I'd stop using softener. Of course it can be put into the first rinse then allowed to be rinsed out. But safer is to use none.

I find that bleach (oxygen and chlorine) absolutely makes me bonkers. Gave up white underwear years ago; the ithcies in the inseam area is not pleasant to witness or exerience.

I always use additional rinses and am reminded by intense itchiness that inexpensive detergents set me on fire; I just can't do it. I manually add a "Short Wash" cycle/programme with my Frigidaire front-loader which functions as three additional rinses.

Tide

used to drive me fcuking ape-shit. I could use any detergent I liked in Europe, no hu-hu. Got to the 'States, was fine for one week then started wearing clothes washed in Tide...

My mom uses a FL, it has six rinses and spins thoroughly to extract between the last three. Still didn't help.

Same reaction to those damned awful dryer sheets.

I don't know what the blasted thing is, but it is not in any of the scent-free detergents.

Why scent detergents in the first place? Do clean clothes stink? Or do the detergents have an unpleasant odor? I have always associated a strong detergent smell with, well, hmm, I guess it just rings très de classe with me.

I had the same problem a few years ago "Tide with Bleach"
I told the doctor I hadn't changed detergents or anything.
he said "Actually, you get more alergic reactions from something you use longterm." "It's best to switch around once in a while."

I switched to Cheer for a box load, went back to regular Tide and haven't had the problem again.

When my Step-Dad was still alive and working out in the fields (he was a farmer) When it was hot he would get "wennie itch" so my Mom would have to put his shorts through a second rinse this seemed to help. Only had the problems in hot weather.

Me too.

I developed Tide-rash years ago. Probably last 1960s or thereabouts.
Haven't used Tide since. Makes me itch. There are others I know of that report the same thing.
Oh well, there are worse things in life...

I believe that I'm in the same group with many of you, since I've noticed some skin breakouts on my back and around my waistline. I've often heard that Tide has been traced to many skin problems and that dermatologists have told their patients to avoid Tide altogether!

I had a friend at my old that could not use any version of Tide without getting a sever rash, but I also have a friend that can only use Tide, all other brands give him and his sister a rash.
