Tide Ultra Oxi Powder for the win

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Thanks for the report.

Tide original stainfighter powder had OXI bleach in it. The formulation used to be sold in a 15.8lb. box at Costco and was labeled to wash 180 loads. The new formulation is in the same size box but only washes 140 loads because it has more OXI powder in it to clean clothes in cooler water, maybe. I did not bite or buy it.

Interesting they didn't discuss Tide With Bleach Powder. I haven't seen Tide Oxi Powder in any of our stores here. Supermarkets just don't carry more than one or two powder choices anymore and even WalMart and Target here don't have the Tide Oxi Powder.
Interesting that the article was updated on January 31, 2024 but suggests trying to find Tide Free and Gentle powder before it disappears. The author is over a year late with that observation. That version of Tide was literally not available anywhere since the beginning of 2023. Unless you want to pay a bloody fortune for one box on Amazon, don't waste your time trying to find it.
I also read some of the comments that people posted under the article. I was amazed at how many people have absolutely no idea how laundry should be done between raving about are those ridiculous laundry sheets that do absolutely nothing and Charlie's Soap... But then I guess to each their own...

Rosalie's Zero Suds

Jeff-Adelphi and I bought what might have been Jon's last batch of 50 lbs. I ration mine by adding a small amount to loads like towels that froth and foam to get perfect results. I understand that he is involved in restoring John's Gyromatic Bendix right now. Ida no about the future.

Just retailer packaging differences?

For several years I bought Tide with Bleach powder from Target. It is the only thing I found that will consistently keep whites white, even better than using LCB on a regular basis. A couple years ago, I started buying Tide with Oxi powder from Costco. It's a larger box than I had been getting at Target and at a better price. I can discern no difference in look, feel, smell, or performance. I concluded it's just retailer packaging differences.

I read this article with great interest

I have been interested in detergent testing results since I was in college, when I came across a consumer reports article in the student library. My membership in this great site has increased my awareness in general of detergents, both vintage and current.

After reading the results of this test, btw thanks Matt for posting!, I am a bit skeptical of the findings, at least in two areas. First, while I do not challenge the findings that many Tide products are at the top of the heap in capabilities, I do not see where they tested Tide 10X Hygenic? I may have become biased, but I have been assuming this is the best of the best, from recent use experience. Did they include this variety? It would seems like a necessary inclusion. Does anyone have recent use to discuss with this product?

Also, while I realize that Tide Simply products are in a lower cost and performance cataegory, I doubt that it/they really belong in a group “Not much better than water”. My findings have been much better than that, most recently with the bleach alternative variant, which I really like.

Any comments? I would be interested to know what other people think of the 10X and simply versions of tide.

If one has a Dollah General they usually carry the Tide Oxi powder. I can also find it at Walmart and Target as well. It does quite well and is on par with Tide w.Bleach powder. I like the Tide Oxi box size that I bought at Walmart since its not the uber sized like Tide w/Bleach that I can find at Target and Walmart. I have not seen either at Publix and Winn Dixie here in FL.

Wire cutter detergent, test results

Hi Gordon and others also thank you Matt for posting this. I find it very interesting reading.

Their results are interesting. They’re probably mostly accurate. They don’t test near enough products I don’t think they do nearly as well as consumer reports for detergent testing they left out too many products that they just dismissed Rather than doing a thorough test.

The basic tide products in the yellow bottles are not real good but they’re probably good enough for many users are typically sold at dollar stores etc. where they are having to compete with the other cheap brands. I bought a bunch of this at flea market for a dollar a bottle and it’s as I say not very good , it’s really lacking the enzymes other things that go in the better version of tide.

Great liquid detergent I really like is Aldi premium stuff that comes in the orange bottle apparently has more than six enzymes in it and it works very well, I tend to use that along with various tide powders .

"All of our picks remove stains and odors in cold water well and leave no residue"

Seriously? Just look at those stain strips from the best performing detergents, to me they look almost as dirty as the unwashed control strip.
If those were cloth napkins would anyone want to use them?
If anything was to prove it`s just that cold water won`t work.

I love to read detergent tests, but Wirecutter lacks a lot of important details.
Even if a test strip comes out completely clean like when you`d wash them in a cold start boil wash it still doesn`t tell that much about the quality of a detergent.
Stain removal is only one side of the coin and it`s worth nothing if clothes get grey or smelly from dirt redepositing after repeated washings.
Some detergents clean like crazy but can wear out clothes faster than others.
A trustworthy detergent test might take this into account.

But anyway it was a nice and interesting read and thanks for posting.

It seems fairly straightforward---Tide Oxy and Persil are the all-singing, all-dancing, multi-enzyme performers. Regular Tide has slightly fewer enzymes. Gain fewer still and Simply Tide/Era don't have any at all. Similarly, the All Oxy and Purex Oxy Plus (and OxyClean High Def) have 3 enzymes, Purex Oxy 1 (just protease, apparently), and plain Purex/All/Arm and Hammer have none, and Xtra/Ajax have none and are diluted. The enzymes are disclosed on the packages, from what I can see.

I generally buy liquids based on the ingredient panel---largest number of enzymes for the cheapest price any given time I'm shopping.

@ Reply 12

Not sure where you see that Purex Oxy Plus has three enzymes. I'm on their website now, and looking at the "Smart Label", it only shows one.

Purex

I have been using that Purex that @littlegreeny posted. It's a wonderful product. It cleans very well, smells wonderful and is priced right!

I'd say it's comparable to the cleaning ability of Tide Original - the base version. If you are using a HE Front Loader, you will need to dose a little less than recommended as it can get frothy. I personally do not have a issue with it though, in a conventional Top Loader.

They rate Tide Free & Gentle the top liquid over Persil Stain fighter.. quite the opposite of what CR does where it's their top detergent along with Tide something or other.. Not even close. But when you consider Wirecutter is a for profit arm of the New York times and as they claim may receive commissions I wouldn't even consider anything the say as valid.
